We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Torrey Montgomery a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Torrey, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is all about mindset. Your mindset can either be a bridge or a barrier. It can be a bridge that can take you to where you desire to be or a barrier that will block you. In order to reach the place of success you have to expand your mind and become successful on your thought life. When you think successful you become successful..
Torrey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I help high level leaders, entrepreneurs, and influencers transform their mindset and shift from where they’re stuck to where they’re designed to be in life, relationships, and business making them 80% more productive and profitable. I found that everyone leader or visionary ask the same question at some point in their journey. That question is “what’s next?” There are so many people that are stuck in the gap between the vision they have and the manifestation of that vision. What I do is I help people shift their mindset in order to become who they need to become in order to walk into what they desire to walk into. A lot of coaches gives steps and strategies. I give identity which I fill is the real key to living out the destiny you are created for.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’m constantly launching out and living by faith. The truth is that sometimes when you live this way it leads you into some situations that don’t look favorable and to some people they seem like major mistakes. Over the last year I was in a situation where I was taking over an organization. It was a million dollar deal that had the potential from the on-start to catapult a lot of what I do. I completely closed down my church in order to fully pursue this deal. I pulled back on my business in order to pursue this deal. The person that I was partnering with on this deal completely shifted on me which resulted in me losing thousands and dollars and going through a moment of financial and mental distress. But I reminded myself that everything has to work. I started looking at the positive moments in the situation and the new connections. I made a pivot in the operation and started a new organization out that situation that has turned out to be a massive movement in our city that is changing lives at levels that I could not have imagined. I realize if I had quite to early or allowed my feelings to dictate my actions I would not be where I am right now. The result of me enduring the tough season is that now I can enjoy the winning season.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that hard work brings success. I know that we are in a grind culture that believes that you should never sleep and that you should work work work work work but the truth is hard work is not the key. Strategic work will always trump hard work. Some of that strategic work means that you find someone that has already done what you desire to do and learn from them. That may take an investment but the people that succeed at the highest level understand the power of personal development. This is where you can collapse time and move at the pace of grace vs toil and stressing out trying to reach your goals.
