Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Torrey McDowell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Torrey , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve had the pleasure of working on several music projects that hold so much meaning, but I personally feel like the value comes from those I get to work with to create the music rather than a specific song. There is something unique about songwriting with people who start out as perfect strangers. The more you write, the more you learn about one another and the trials they’ve faced. That is extremely personal and I am thankful for every writer that opens up and allows me to do the same.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a singer and songwriter originally from Georgia. I moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting and to work in the industry a year and a half ago. I work in business management and love it! I learn something new every single day and love that I get to experience both the creative and business sides of the music industry. I am a creative but I also require organization and consistency and my music career allows me to maintain both.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I feel like my drive is fueled by the desire to be successful and do what I was told I couldn’t. I know that there are easier journeys I could take, but I have tried to do that in the past and always ended up feeling like I wasn’t truly fulfilled. I would rather dig deep doing something that makes me feel most like myself and risk “failure” than to never try.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I understood the value of strengthening my inner voice. I doubted myself in every way possible before getting to Nashville and still struggle with that today. Often, my mind drifts off and lands in a comparison game which is hard. I am constantly reminding myself that there is room for me in the music industry and the only way I will every truly fail is if I don’t give it my all.
