We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Torrey Gleason. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Torrey below.
Torrey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I can’t imagine doing anything else. I am lucky that my job as a teacher is rewarding in multiple ways – I get to work with students who are passionate about what they do and help bring their ideas to life, but having summers off allows me time to dedicate to my personal practice.
Torrey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m originally from northern Illinois, and developed a love for art as a small child. I attended Southeast Missouri State University where I received my BFA in Fine Arts, and went on to get my MFA from Indiana University. Being in programs surrounded by caring professors and other dedicated students gave me the right amount of challenge to push my creative process further. My research currently centers around the relationship between individual and brand identities, particularly in magazine advertising. As a designer, my interdisciplinary fine arts background is a huge asset. While at IU, I also discovered a love for teaching, and am now an Assistant Professor in the graphic design area there.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My education was significantly impacted by COVID-19. I finished my undergraduate degree in the spring of 2020 when the pandemic was at its height, and was disappointed to not be able to exhibit my senior work, or attend graduation with my cohort. I began graduate school the following fall. Moving to a new city where I knew no one, and all classes were online, it was a struggle to meet people and build community. This made it difficult to find motivation or inspiration to create new and exciting artwork, and I had to learn how to successfully self-motivate and find new processes and modes to work in.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
There are so many ways to support creatives that don’t take much time, and many ways are free! Show up to local art events, craft fairs, and gallery openings when you can. Engage with and share social media posts from artists you know! And as much as you’re able, choose to support small businesses when you do make purchases.
