We recently connected with Torrance Hill and have shared our conversation below.
Torrance, appreciate you joining us today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
I started working professionally in the video production industry ten years ago as a “freelancer following his dream.” Today, I am the founder and proud owner of Noir Prism Studios, with over ten collaborators. We are passionate about working with our clients to make their production experience with us an enjoyable one.
My story as a video producer began in 2013 when I graduated from Howard University with a BA in Communications and an emphasis in Radio, Television, and Film. At the time, I was working in retail as a suit salesman. I enjoyed interacting with people and providing them with excellent customer service, but I soon knew it was time to move on and to work in my field. I landed my first full-time gig as a freelancer, and it was a great experience. I traveled, made a decent wage, and, most importantly, was doing what I loved. What could go wrong? Well…taxes! Sadly, I had no clue how to file taxes as a freelancer, and I had to pay a sizeable amount to Uncle Sam.
I could have chosen to never bet on myself and not freelance again, but I didn’t. Instead, I told myself that I needed to take the business side of my passion as seriously as the creative side. This was the first step in my journey to become a business owner. As part of my daily routine, I read books about successful entrepreneurs or listen to audiobooks to maximize my productivity. I soon became just as obsessed with business as with video production.
During this time, my clientele grew immensely, and I was able to communicate with them to understand better how to provide them with solutions for their needs. I often asked for feedback on their experience working with me during production. Almost to a person, I was told that they felt that their videos were well done and professionally executed and appreciated the feeling of being a true collaborator. With that feedback in mind, I decided to make “excellent customer service” the foundational principle and goal of my business and brand.
Word started to spread, and it wasn’t long before I had a workload I couldn’t handle. I started hiring friends to help with the workload, but it soon became apparent that I had a problem and needed a solution: to form a video production studio. So, in January 2022, I officially incorporated my video production company, Noir Prism Studios. I set my goal for the year to land one major project and a few smaller projects. By the end of 2022, however, we completed ten major projects and well over twenty small to medium-sized projects, exceeding my expectations for the year tenfold!
My story is not about luck, it’s about preparation. Learn to prepare yourself for success, so you’ll be ready when the opportunity arises.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My best advice for growing your clientele is always to leave a lasting impression. Regardless of the success of the project, I always want my clients to feel that they were respected and treated with care. This will ensure that your brand maintains a positive image and that people want to continue working with you. Not only that, but they will also refer you to other possible clients.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Who are “clients?” They’re people, right? I treat clients like people. It’s that easy. Customer service is not about how nice a video looks or how fast you respond to emails. That’s your job. Customer service is about building a relationship with your clients. I check in on my clients often when we’re not working together. I ask about their families, businesses, and hobbies, and I share snippets about some of the projects I’m working on and my personal life. Most people want to do business with someone they have a relationship with. I build relationships with my clients, and that fosters loyalty.
