Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Torie Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Torie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
In 2016, I was invited to another music summit, this one in Columbus, GA, as part of the committee. It was there I was introduced to a media company called Hot Talk Radio, led by Trapper John, a well-known DJ and promoter. This was a self-start company to join their online radio platform. I was so excited because I had always wanted to know what it was like to be a radio show producer. I dove right in. I connected with a few friends I knew who would assist me in creating a show. As a promoter from my Atlanta club/event promoter days, I already had a marketing and promotion head start. I curated a cast and crew in one week and went into staging a set in my living room to look like a studio. The cast brought over anything that would help create the scene, and we were off to record our first show. This show was the perfect mix of personalities. Everyone had their lane and just winged it with my direction behind the camera. It felt like a promising start. Sadly, it was the only show recorded, but the promo was pushed so well on social media and caught the attention of the owners. I was named head of the division for Jacksonville, FL, and was highlighted monthly. As I tried to revamp the cast, they were all headed in different directions, and the show was shaping up to change the feel and narrative. So, my only option left to save the reputation I was building was to turn to a more corporate feel, and it no longer fit the platform I was growing on. The owners asked if I could join the staff, but my heart was set on seeing if I could pull off branding my own platform, and with what I learned from this experience, I would put everything to use. But I still was not fully understanding the business side of things, just using the techniques I knew from experience. So, I formed my own company called POWER 904 RADIO, did the LLC, and went for broke, so to speak. The road was not easy and was very slow to pick up. I did not realize how to gain business and shows to fill up the slots on the radio station. I met a wonderful soul named ERIC ROBBINS, who took me under his wing and gave me the tools to restart my brand and do things the correct way Now it has been a few years and a revolving door of radio station staff; learning was fun and hurtful all at the same time.
In my heart and with the way I marketed the station, companies were willing to give me a shot to pitch for my platform slots. I knew I had something, so I never stopped building.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Born in 1976, Torie Jones, a native of Jacksonville, Florida, grew up loving art. My passion for art began at an early age. As a child, I was surrounded by art and music, along with the beauty of my family’s love for arts and crafts, which kept my interest in fine arts.
I am a motivated mother of three with over twenty years of experience in various aspects of the entertainment industry, including management, promotions, and event planning. I now hold the title of CEO of my own online radio station and am a local body artist. My abstract way of thinking leads to multiple ideas in both worlds. My original hand-painted works on bodies and canvas come straight from my imagination. I am fascinated by art as a universal language, from mixing my own music to mixing it up with paint.
After many years of drawing, I moved to Atlanta, GA, and started painting with acrylic paint on canvas. I moved forward, experimenting with abstracts in various mediums. This pushed me to expand my horizons and tap into new areas of painting that I had not yet explored.
There was obvious freedom and personal expression with abstracts, and it was then that I realized I began to flourish. I was deeply interested in the effects of color, texture, and emotional response to strong composition and design.
By removing representational art and creating something that told a story without an observational subject matter, I found it very exciting. Today, my work is a bold mix of styles of art, ranging from crafting, sculpting, and music to graphic design and media. I create content, organize and facilitate various events, and practice body art using not just paint but multiple materials. I bring a subtle and sophisticated feel to my life through all aspects of art, maintaining a unique balance of respect for the art industry.
I share my wisdom and experiences to help anyone seeking to follow the same path in the industry. I became so passionate about this that I started assisting other business owners in the industry, which eventually spilled over into life coaching and managing artists and other aspiring entrepreneurs. I get pulled to help with major celebrity projects and events to hosting my own mental health events. I am a cereal concept thinker, with huge ideas and cant wait to follow through with the hundreds of ideals I have form small to bigger than life events.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped my reputation was the fact I stand on my word, and I follow through with my obligations to any project I am a part. I place 100 percent effort into my work and will give my take on anything i see needs to improve or should not take place.
I also dare to be different, meaning I don’t always play by the rules to get the project done. I make sure it is coming from my creative heart. I take the time to find out what is missing and do what I can to get the project flowing in the right direction.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
The thing I learned the most dealing in the entertainment industry is that relationships need to be built in order to get in the right conversations and rooms. Finding out the common areas you share or will share is crucial to be effective. I make the text, calls, and check-ins to clients and potential clients. Sometimes It is the right time to hear from someone that is checking to see how they are doing. A smile is so worth it to me. I would love to give a big shout out to my first team helping me birth Power904 Radio.
