Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tori Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tori , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story behind my mission is that i had no other choice. In my late teenage years, i made some mistakes that altered my life and life opportunities. I got into some legal trouble at the age of 17, in which i was charged as an adult. This affected certain job opportunities, living situations, and so forth. Once you make a mistake, no matter your age, it causes lifelong consequences. After finding out i was pregnant at the age of 17, I knew something had to be done; I had to figure out how to supply a decent life for my child. I have always had a passion for skincare and beauty; so when i got introduced to waxing, I knew I had found an outing. I started my business from the backroom of my home. It took off slowly, as any fresh business would, but i just kept faith. Waxing was a new found passion that has turned into my career. Its an amazing feeling to be able to help both women and men improve their skin and boost their overall confidence; All while being able to provide a decent lifestyle for my (2) children. I cant thank my loyal clients and supporters enough.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Tori Johnson. I am a newlywed and young mother of two. I am from the East Houston area, born and raised. I started my business journey just at the age of 17. I was young, pregnant, and lost. I started off working at ‘Nothing Bundt Cakes’ in the galleria area. I loved the job, but it order to sufficiently provide for my child, I needed another source of income. I applied at ‘European Wax Center’ which was next door to my current job. Being that I had a criminal background, I didn’t expect to be hired. To my surprise, the supervisor appreciated my honesty, and hired me on spot. I worked for the company for about 4-5 years, in both guest services and management. After managing the company for a while, I learned the in and outs to running a business myself. I then knew I could start, build, and manage my own, versus doing so for someone else. I was ready and prepared for every obstacle, as I knew it wouldn’t be a walk in the park. The services I now offer are waxing, vacials (skin care for intimate areas), skin tag removal, teeth whitening, tooth gems, underarm and inner thigh treatments, and more. I have hosted trainings and coach hundreds of women on starting their journey. I have learned so much over the years that has helped me help others. One thing I am proud of is never giving up. One thing I love about myself is that I am always a student. I will always be willing to learn more. There is someone out there that will always be smarter, more advanced, and willing to teach. One thing that sets me apart from others in my industry, is that I am very transparent. What you see is what you get. I keep things very professional, but also very down to earth. I build genuine relationships with all of my clients, which is something I cherish. Entrepreneurship isn’t for the weak. They don’t talk about the hard times, slow weeks, amount of effort and marketing needed. I have been able to build a foundation for my kids all off the strength of hope and faith. That’s what i am most proud of.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Covid! Most definitely year 2020. This time was hard for all business owners. As you all know, the beauty industry was not considered “ESSENTIAL” during covid time. We were being forced to completely shut down, with no source of income. The government doesn’t help small business owners how they should. They made unemployment a headache to receive. We had to be forced to either continue working (illegally) or struggle for months due to no source of income. This was definitely a hard time for us all; business were lost and shut down. People lost everything they had worked for over the years; but I personally managed to pull through. I couldn’t be anymore thankful to my clients that made this happen.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Giving clients the experience I would expect from a Beauty Salon. I have always been very time punctual and kept things professional no matter the circumstance. When it comes to services, I am very detail oriented which shows in my work. Clients appreciate getting the quality of service that they pay for, which results in great clientelle retention. Word of mouth will always be my biggest marketing strategy, which is why I always ensure all clients leave satisfied.
