We were lucky to catch up with Tori Fields recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tori, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to Pursue art , was when I realized that art was what I used to cope with a lot that was going on in my world. I had lost someone that was very close to me… like a sister. Whenever I got lost in my emotions , or in deep thought about her, my mom and me, noticed I always picked up a pencil or a paint brush and just go to work… I went through my own accident once, where I almost lost my life….to where I couldn’t work or do anything for that matter… I had nothing but art. Art took my mind off so many things and I would just get lost in it… that’s when i KNEW.
Tori, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tori Fields and I’m 29 , from Detroit Michigan. I’ve been drawing since I was 13 in middle school, tracing and just looking at a picture and drawing from that. My mother was really the artist in the family and I kind of just took after her with drawing and doing nails as well.. my first viewing of my art was in 2019. I used to be apart of a team that hosted these events called “The Kickback” and it was always a great vibe with good music and good people to network with. I eventually became their “House Artist” meaning my art stayed in there regardless of who the featured artist was. And I will say , they were the first to really give me that shot and believed in me to get my art out there… from there, I then moved on to doing specific events that showcased a lot of our peoples talent , whether it was music , designing clothes , art. ANYTHING a creative could think of honestly. Then my next big art viewings came from being introduced to “TrapxArt” in 2019 as well. I got the honor to not only be apart of one , but three of those and it was always amazing. I made sure that whenever they came to Detroit, I was on the list to be apart. Once I started creating the business cards for that event , I became so real for me. Gave me a chance to network with other artists , even do some live paintings , and just see what this scene was really about and from there , it was only UP. I had officially became apart of the Art Scene & I knew that’s where I was supposed to be.. in July of 2021, one of my good friends, goes by Asaka The Renegade, had threw his own concert and took one of my creations I made for him and surprised me with so much. He had it on the back of his tickets , made it apart of the flyer , and once you got to the concert, there was merch with my art on it! And that had to be one of the greatest and proudest moments ever. It was the first of a lot for me in this art world and I was so grateful…. i eventually started tapping into other ways to create art. Whether is was doing hair , doing nails , throwing my art on clothes and shoes. The thing about a lot of my art that makes it different from others , is I don’t add the eyes…. It’s kind of a signature for me… I add every other facial feature BUT the eyes. Yes, eyes are important… but with my art I make everything else important to the point you can tell the expression on the face without them. And you create your own eyes…
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist has to be the reaction of the client once the project is done…. I never went into art for the money or anything like that, it’s seeing the happiness across the face of my people, or the tears that comes down their faces .. I love being able to create something that really makes them FEEL. You know? And when the client is happy , I’m happy. It lets me know I did my job correctly and makes me feel good that I could literally put a smile on their face. This is my passion and what I love to do , and that’s how I want them to feel. That they love it just as much as I loved creating it.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
A non-creative will never truly understand the TIME, or the literal blood sweat and tears you have to put into being a creative. Or being here or there , or this party or that party just to network. Not to party. The late nights and early mornings or even just hearing the word “no”. It maybe a month where you may lack the motivation to even create , or a month where your business or your creations don’t do as well as they did the other month. Regardless of all of that, you gotta find something in you and create your own inspiration to keep going. It’s not always easy , but if it’s something you truly love, it’ll work.
