We were lucky to catch up with Tori B. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tori thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
One of the most exciting moments as a creative was getting my very first paycheck during the pandemic. It was not a lot, but l was extremely grateful to be considered. l thought to myself, l must be doing something right if someone is going to pay me for my content. Over time, I’ve learned how to negotiate what l want and being ok with turning down projects that aren’t aligned with my worth. Don’t get me wrong, it would hurt turning down work because who doesn’t like money? Plus money adds up, but sometimes you have to show people how to treat you. Always remember, when one door closes, another one opens.

Tori, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello readers, my name is Tori. I am a creative, beauty enthusiast, plus l do a lot of product advertisement. I started my creative journey four years ago, and l wouldn’t take the experiences that has molded me into the person l am today back. I am most proud of my growth, and how l never allowed myself to give up. I am grateful for the amazing souls that support me when l share my content, and those who uplift me when things are going slow in my life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
This topic is VERY important. In my opinion, and personal experiences.. a lot of non creative people think that what l do will not lead me far. Yes, l post on social media but it is a stepping stone for me. l know that my hard work is paying off and will continue to put me in rooms that others thought I was not qualified for. For a lot of creatives, work is slow but we are working towards something far bigger than us; and that’s what l want a lot of non creatives to understand. The best advice l can give to creatives going through this, remember why you started and have tunnel vision towards your dreams.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One way that society can support artists is stop underpaying/ lowballing hard working creatives. It’s very sad seeing creatives put in hours of effort into content, film time or even painting just to get the short end of the stick.
