We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Torey Varner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Torey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
The more experience I have, the more lessons I learn about myself, what my work preferences are, the type of environment I thrive in, my worth, and much more. There is one specific experience at a previous job that taught me a lot and gave me my power as a young professional. I was about 2 years into my injecting career and came upon a job offer that seemed incredible: decent pay, room for growth, and a lot of educational opportunities. Being newer in the industry, I hopped on the offer due to the guidance and elevation it was supposed to provide me. Little did I know it was not going to provide that. After about a year, so many shifts happened in the company that were alarming to me, I was given so many empty promises, and my job was not what it was supposed to be. I ended up leaving the position. In the moment, I was worried, scared and had no idea what my next move was. I did not have a job lined up or really any leads. After taking the time to let the situation settle, I saw it with a clearer mindset. I was happy I was courageous enough to leave a circumstance that was not serving me or supporting my journey. Getting back on my feet was not easy, but it was worth it. Through my next interview processes, I was not afraid to ask for what I wanted, negotiate, and identify things that seemed that they could be a future problem. I truly felt myself coming into my power, knowing my worth as a professional, and not taking anything less. This realization has led me to where I am at now: thriving, growing, and having so much unfolding in the near future. I think starting off in any professional career, it can be nerve-racking to ask for what you want or deserve. What I have learned though is you will never get what you want if you do not ask and if they say no, maybe they are not for you.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Registered Nurse with a nationally recognized specialty in Medical Aesthetics and Wellness. In 2016, I graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and shortly after obtained my RN license. I originally went to Nursing School to pursue a career as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, but things did not go how I planned. It is hard to explain, but I had a sense of uneasiness with the path I had chosen for myself. After passing my RN Licensure exam, I decided to make a change and I picked up and moved across the country to Arizona. This was a huge leap of faith, but the best decision and risk that was necessary for my personal discovery and career shift. I discovered the world of aesthetics from Instagram. I had always been a science nerd and fascinated by the industry, so I decided to investigate the process to get certified. Immediately I researched a course and enrolled; after completing it, I was fully devoted on making this my craft.
I joined Morph Aesthetics about 6 months ago. This seems like a short time, but ironically the owner, Brandie, was my first mentor. It was a no-brainer when we reconnected and found out how much our goals aligned to transition into a partnership with one another. Morph is a premier, luxury med spa dedicated to bringing our patient’s the best in aesthetic and cosmetic treatments. We specialize in full face restoration by customizing treatment plans with injectables such as filler and Botox, facials, and medical grade skin care. Alongside treating patients, we are a known training destination for both new and experienced injectors. We pride ourselves on both educating and being life-long learners to provide the highest level of care.
I take the most pride in my eagerness to learn the best practices in the industry from some of the top injectors in the world. My extensive knowledge combined with my genuine care for my patients is what grew my loyal clientele. I believe my artistic eye elevates my practice to set me apart yielding natural, undetectable results. Behind the scenes, one of the most rewarding experiences is when I can see the patient transformation not only physically but through their confidence. As a provider, this ultimately makes me the most proud and fulfilled.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In the field of Medical Aesthetics, proper training and education are essential to be a great injector. What is also extremely important is the ability to connect with your patients. When a patient comes in for the first time, they can be in an extremely vulnerable state, they can come in from lack of confidence, or maybe just not feeling completely like themselves. I always say connecting with others is my super power. When a patient comes in for a consultation and I meet them for the first time, I pride myself in providing a safe space for us to sit down and get to know each other, build trust, and understand exactly why they are there. Additionally, understanding the patient’s perception of themselves and identifying their realistic aesthetic goals plays a huge part in forming an ongoing relationship and developing a customized treatment plan. My motto for my practice is that you are not just here for an appointment; we are forming a relationship and treatment plan to prevent signs of aging and have you age gracefully throughout the years.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The Medical Aesthetics Industry can be very cut throat. In the Valley, there are a lot of med spas and providers so it is crucial to stand out. I think the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been referrals. Patients that have been treated by me are my biggest advocates. They trust me and are my walking billboards for my work. I think my biggest point of advice is to implement a referral program to incentivize and rewards patients for sending people in. Even though referrals are wonderful, I think its important to have different strategies that compliment. Reviews, social media presence, optimizing SEOs, and partnering with people and businesses in the community are other ways I grow my clientele. Dabbling in different avenues to generate exposure and networking with like-minded people are super helpful strategies.
