We caught up with the brilliant and insightful TooBrightSHINE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, TooBrightSHINE thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I started making music at the age of 12. I used to use an old tape recorder that my Auntie Beverly gave me who is sadly not with us anymore. Of course I started off horrible, so I was always hungry to become better and better. I wanted to sound just like my favorite legends such as 2pac and Scarface. Settling just wasn’t an option, so I have eagerly perfecting the craft ever since.
TooBrightSHINE, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am aiming to be the best rapper to ever do it. TooBrightSHINE is more than just a name or a brand. It’s a passed down legacy from my great grandfather. It’s the embodiment of what true art is supposed to be. I open the hearts of many people in a relatable and digestible manner. One of my key attributes are my performances. I completely “spazz out” when I’m on stage and make the listener step into my shoes. I started off going to local open mics and now I’m performing in festivals like SXSW and out of state venues. I want to take my passion across the globe!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is completion of being. In order to be the best rapper to ever be, I feel like there’s more to it than making songs and going to the studio. It’s about touching the people. I want to BRIGHTEN other peoples lives through dark times, because a lot of my journey have been in solitude. I want to be there for the depressed listener who don’t have the support system that is needed to keep going in todays society. I want to be there for the misunderstood. Every business is about profit margin and longevity but without the people investing their time and money into the business, it would cease to exist.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of my main attributes as an artist is that I never quit and never plan on doing so. I took a lot of losses as an upcoming artist and as a human being. I use every loss as a lesson to keep going. The only thing that’s going to stop me from accomplishing my dreams is a casket and even after that my legacy will live and be passed on for generations.
