We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tonya Edwards. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tonya below.
Alright, Tonya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To me, success is more than the amount of money in your bank account or the accolades and awards hanging on your wall; it is a mindset. At 30 years old, I stopped waiting for “THE BIG MOMENT”—you know, that moment when you sit back and say, “YES! I HAVE FINALLY DONE IT!” Instead, I began celebrating my small wins. I found that when I acknowledge my current successes while still working toward my goals, my vision for what I want in life becomes much clearer. I stopped dwelling on my past and the various paths I explored in my search for self-discovery, including the so-called “failed” attempts at different careers. Instead, I began to view my journey from a new perspective. I am a renaissance woman, a creative individual with the courage to pursue anything I set my mind to. The true key to success is happiness and the confidence that your big “AHA!” moment is happening right now!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have a quote on my desk that reads, “I am basically a full-time therapist who shows houses every now and then.” It often brings a good laugh among the other agents in the office, but there’s truth to it. When I entered the real estate industry, it felt like a leap of faith; I wasn’t sure if this was the path I truly wanted to take. In fact, I was still figuring out who I was and what my purpose was. The pandemic turned my life upside down, and I realized I needed to be in a position where I had control over my business and, ultimately, my life. I craved the freedom of entrepreneurship—I always have. I studied hard, passed the exam, and joined a brokerage that I felt offered the best support.
However, I quickly discovered that real estate school teaches you very little. I still don’t know how many square feet are in an acre! Real estate is fundamentally a relationship business, and connecting with my clients while providing five-star service at every price point is one of the pillars of my practice. The most rewarding part of my job is supporting my peers in becoming first-time homebuyers and being part of the biggest investment of their lives. Purchasing a home can be emotional and sometimes daunting, but having the right agent by your side can make all the difference. Always lead your business with compassion!
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Maintaining relationships is the core of being a successful real estate agent. I make sure that I am always setting reminders too reach out to my past and future clients either with text messages, phone calls or a personal handwritten note. I am also known to do an occasional pop by when I am in the neighborhood!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I take great pride in being ethical, empathetic, and transparent, qualities that have enabled me to build and maintain valuable relationships both in the industry and with my clients
