Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tony Sharpe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tony thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
As a business owner, I am often asked whether I am happier running my own business compared to having a regular job. It’s a thought-provoking question that occasionally crosses my mind, prompting moments of reflection and introspection. Yes, running a business comes with its challenges and uncertainties, but it also offers unparalleled freedom, creativity, and fulfillment. The ability to pursue my vision, make meaningful impact, and chart my own course is immensely rewarding, despite the occasional hardships.
While a regular job may offer stability and comfort, it may also come with limitations and restrictions that stifle personal growth and ambition. As a business owner, I have the autonomy to shape my destiny, overcome obstacles, and pursue my dreams—a privilege that far outweighs the allure of a conventional career path.
In essence, my journey as an entrepreneur has taught me that happiness and fulfillment stem not from the nature of the job itself, but from aligning with one’s passion, purpose, and values. While the path of entrepreneurship may be challenging at times, it is also incredibly rewarding, offering opportunities for growth, self-discovery, and unparalleled satisfaction.

Tony, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Having spent over 25 years in the culinary industry, I’ve always had a passion for bringing people together through food. Born and raised in Philadelphia, cheesesteaks were a huge part of my childhood so I knew when I got the opportunity to start my own business that I wanted to create something to acknowledge my upbringing and my love for my city.
Mad Dads Philly’s Authentic Philly Cheesesteaks and Hoagies started with Mad Dads Sauces and Seasonings a product line we created to showcase our unique sauces and seasonings. But it did not come into fruition until after a life changing experience with COVID which resulted in me having to learn how to walk and talk again.
It was truly the wake up call that I needed to go after my dreams and expand the brand.
Mad Dads Philly’s is truly a love letter to Philadelphia and what sets us apart is our commitment to quality ingredients, unique sauces and seasonings and a touch of personal flair.

Have you ever had to pivot?
In my culinary journey, I’ve navigated various avenues, each presenting its unique set of challenges and opportunities. Armed with classical training, I’ve ventured through fast-food chains, fine dining establishments, and even served as a private chef. However, it was an unexpected turn that truly broadened my horizons: transitioning to become an executive chef for assisted living communities. It was a sector I hadn’t envisioned myself in initially, but the experience proved to be immensely rewarding. Connecting with a different audience and providing exceptional meals for residents and their families became a fulfilling endeavor. This pivot taught me invaluable lessons about adaptability and the importance of embracing new opportunities. It reinforced the notion that success in any career requires openness to growth and a willingness to explore uncharted territories. These experiences have not only enriched my culinary repertoire but also expanded my perspective on life and career.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Our journey to gather the initial capital to kickstart our business was an exercise in resourcefulness and determination. Facing the challenge of limited access to traditional funding sources for small businesses, we relied on our personal funds and investments to lay the foundation for our venture. Despite the obstacles, we remained undeterred, determined to turn our vision into reality. To overcome the barriers posed by conventional funding avenues, we began exploring grants from both the private and public sectors, tapping into available resources to fuel our growth. As we continue to expand, we aim to foster stronger relationships with our community bank and consider avenues such as small business loans to further support our endeavors. For aspiring entrepreneurs embarking on a similar journey without immediate access to funds, we advise seeking out grants, cultivating relationships with potential silent investors, and exploring alternative funding options to turn dreams into tangible successes.
