We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tony Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tony , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I have always loved video production and telling stories. I’ve also been a long life pro wrestling fan and always had an interest in getting into the business. When I visited a independent wrestling show back in 2019 an idea came to mind. There’s all these extremely talented wrestlers who are working hard to make it to the WWE and now AEW ( which wasn’t around when I went to this show ) and why can’t I use what I know as a video production specialist to spotlight these talented guys a and girls.
When I sought out to do this I also just didn’t want to be a guy with a cell phone. I wanted to bring multiple cameras, lighting and microphones to make my videos look as professional as possible.
Tony , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I don’t most people have an idea of the time commitment it takes. The writing of emails and DMS. The driving to venues ( sometimes 3-5 hours away for a show I want to cover. Arriving 3 hours before the show to set up and conduct the interviews. Recording matches for broll. Interviews after the show. Then the drive back. The editing for all social media platforms.
I’ve had former co-workers and friends how do I keep up the energy to pump out as much content as I do. Well when you absolutely love what you do, it makes it much easier.
In addition to going to shows I also host a Live podcast DROPPING DOWN FROM THE RAFTERS on the Toned In Entertainment YouTube channel ( usually once a week ) where I have guests on from other parts of the country or regular guest for themed shows.
What sets me apart is how many interviews I do. 142 in person interviews alone in 2024.
I’m most proud of the reception I have received doing this from both the wrestlers and owners of the companies. Some promotions have been skeptical at first when I reach out to them. But I always believe if you go in professional, treat it serious that my first impression will surely being asked to come back again.
I’m also proud of that not only do these guys and girls trust me to tell their stories the first time, but that I have often become the guy they come to when they want to do another interview.
In addition to doing journalism interviews for my channel, that has opened the door for me to also do ring announcing and Back Stage Interviews where we focus on telling the stories that are going on in that promotion.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
They say if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. And while that part of the journey is not and easy one, I’m giving it my all to turn the dream into a reality
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding is when after and interview the guest says That Was Fun or This Was The Best Interview or Podcast I’ve done.
