We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tony Logan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tony below.
Hi Tony, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When it comes to fashion and writing, both have to deal with finding your style. Music was my entryway into fashion because music videos were style tutorials on how to look, act, and feel growing up in the 90s. Early hip-hop visuals gave me a visual of different lifestyles, showcasing a lifestyle I couldn’t even imagine as a young teen. Later, blogging became a way for me to document fashion through style editorials for websites and magazines like Solediction, GQ, The Stndrd, and Vouch Mag. Both of these outlets significantly influenced how I would later become a Personal Stylist and Journalist.
One thing I learned as I became more seasoned in my field that I wish I had known back then was to start! I was insecure about entering the fashion field as a Personal Stylist and Journalist because I did not have the school credentials like my peers who went to college. I felt like I needed that validation from college to do what I needed to do when in reality, I didn’t need it. School is a great way to expand your knowledge of fashion further, but it’s not the only way, and I learned just by being immersed in the culture through internships, jobs, and just being on the scene; you can learn just as much!
People skills were essential to my success because you have to have people skills for people to trust you. I work with clients who have never worked with a stylist before so it can be intimidating and uncomfortable at first. Understanding how people may feel will help you better understand how to serve them.
Obstacles that stood in my way of learning more were being prideful sometimes. Fashion is constantly changing, and sometimes we can get to a point where we feel like we have learned all that we need to know, but life is constantly changing, which means we should be too. So, taking opportunities outside of just personal styling and writing has helped expand my knowledge even more. More recently, I took a chance to become a Visual Merchandiser and learned what that field looks like, which has increased my understanding of product and styling even more! So it’s all about overcoming being comfortable and feeling prideful, and always staying curious.
Tony, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tony Logan, and I’m a Personal Stylist, Fashion Journalist, and coffee drinker! I got into fashion through writing after being inspired by the late Glenn O’Brien’s “Style Guy” column in GQ. As I started blogging, I later transitioned into writing for men’s fashion publications and then became a Personal Stylist shortly after.
My job as a Personal Stylist is to help my client feel comfortable, valued, and stylish. Clothes have a powerful way of helping us make a statement, but the problem for some is not understanding what statement they are looking to make. My job is to understand the purpose behind what they are looking for so together we can find an outfit or look to help communicate that. My goal is to help your clothes make a statement without you having to make a statement.
As a writer, my job is to create content that is easy to understand and to help you become more knowledgeable while keeping it entertaining.
One of the things I’m most proud of was getting my style column into print and having Pharrell Williams be one of the people I profiled for the issue. This was amazing because I am a huge fan of print magazines; Pharrell Williams is my favorite artist and style inspiration and making it in print was validation for myself at the time that I could be a journalist.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to transform an idea into a product or service that can benefit someone. I love that I can serve people through the gifts and talents that God has blessed me with. This reward only improves as you continue to work on your gift and always keep a heart to serve.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Starting in fashion as a blogger and later as a journalist helped my reputation as a Personal Stylist because writing gave me creditability. Before giving people style advice, I created editorials and content on how to dress and to help provide new ways to transform their wardrobes. So, I encourage any Personal Stylist or Digital Stylist to partner with publications and websites to help spread your knowledge about fashion because it’s a great way to attract new clients and to stay knowledgeable about what’s going on in the fashion industry at the same time.
