We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tony Lockett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tony thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind my mission has changed over the last few years. The birth of my daughter Tegan Grace Lockett was one of the main factors that triggered the change. I was originally focused on doing whatever kind of art projects I could get my hands on, I was doing Paint & Sip Parties, Logo Design, Commercial Graphics, Murals, Commissions, even dabbled in a little videography and photography. But my vision has shifted, and therefore my mission is different. The story I want to tell with my mission now is that of a Legacy. I want to start the legacy of being an artist that my father never had a chance to fulfill prior to his passing. I want to begin the work needed to leave a legacy of creativity for my daughter. My mission now is to focus on my true passion of being a visual artist only, and painting the things that inspire me. As an artist now if my future work is not inspiring to others, that is fine, as I am now in the business of only inspiring my daughter to be her on true self.
Tony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Visual Pop Artist who has been drawing since I was 8 or 9 years old, I have grown into an all around artist who is proficient in several creative areas. But my true passion is creating original pop art. I love to blend old images with modern design and blend the culture with traditional fine are detail. I also for the last 25 years have been working in Graphic Communication & Design. I have been creating logos, and promotional material for business, individuals, and organizations from every background.
I believe what has set me apart over the last few years is my unwillingness to compromise. As an artist you have to stand firm in your areas of creativity. When working with a client or just creating for self, you have to believe in you creative gut. People will always have opinions, that doesn’t make them right or wrong, and standing you ground doesn’t make you right or wrong as an artist, but it does show your confidence and belief in yourself and you ability to create and see the big picture.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the reaction from the people who really love what you have created. The last few commissions that I worked on have had the most amazing impact on the people for whom they were created. I pull inspiration now from knowing that once they see this painting or design they will love it. I put love into my art when I am creating it so that when people get to see it that is the feeling they get, the way I ensure that continues to happen is to stick to working on projects that speak to me and not doing work just for the money or the fame. I do it for the love.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
There has only really ever been one source for getting new clients that has worked for me. I have tried social media ads. I have tried posting on Instagram and Facebook everyday on a specific time schedule, going live, and even encouraging my friends and family to share my post to try and draw attention to my work. None of that has worked for me. What works best for me is word of mouth. When I do a project for someone, they then show it to their friends and family, someone from that group will ask for my number, reach out to me and that gets me another client. An so on and so on. I put my all into any of my projects so that my client regardless of wether they are spending hundreds of dollars or thousands of dollars with me, I give them the same experience. I like to remain personable an be humble open and transparent.
