We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tony Deien a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tony, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Ever since I was 10 years old, I wanted to travel from coast to coast. Forty-five years later, the adventure began. Everyone began asking questions of how I would attempt such a feat. Many shared disbeliefs of being able to make it happen. My trek across the United States began to attract many virtual followers. These followers claimed they wish they could do the same but because of constraints in life it was not possible. As the travels continued, the popularity grew. A childhood wish turns into an educational nonprofit “promoting curiosity and education by bringing to life stories of people and places in the United States, one state at a time”. Our goal is to explore every state traveling 48 states in 48 months. Today we have thousands following this journey.
Tony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The United States of America is full of beautiful sites, unusual attractions and unique personalities. Each one has a story to tell. Our mission is to expose each state for its uniqueness through photography and engaging storytelling. Our travels take us to the biggest metropolitan cities to the most rural areas.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am constantly asked, “What is your favorite thing or place in your travels so far?” I answer with a huge smile, “It is the people I encounter along the way.” I continue our conversation sharing that everyone I encounter has a story to tell. Some of my favorite new friendships are a Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara Nation Indian Chief from North Dakota to Harriett McFeely who operates a Big Foot Museum out of her Nebraska home.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media was a new platform for me when I began this journey. It is about taking baby steps. It is about not being afraid to share. As you continue to post, you grow in experience and confidence. My recommendation is to use social media as you would if the person is sitting next to you in a coffee shop. Share your experiences with your personality. People want to feel a part of something and your personal communication welcomes such.
