We were lucky to catch up with Tony and Nick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tony and Nick, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
One of the biggest lesson we learned from podcasting was finding our voice. When we first started podcasting about 3 years ago we would just ramble the topic at hand with little context. Now we select certain topics that bring some type of value to our audience such as humor, informative news or just a different perspective on a debate with nerd culture.
Tony and Nick, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Our names are Tony and Nick, we a host a Orlando-based podcast called, “From My Mom’s Garage”. We love comics, games, anime and especially movies. Our topics normally revolves around nerd pop culture news and movie reviews. Additionally, we noticed that the nerd culture communities in Central Florida do not receive the recognition they deserve. We try to get more involved in different communities within nerd culture (gaming, comics, anime, music, art, etc.). We want to help promote these communities using our platform. One of the ways is by going to local comic/movie/theme conventions and doing mini tiktok interviews with the vendors to highlight the local artist and the event itself. Also hosting our own paint with a twist style event with locals artist and comic shops.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One of best way to support an artist is to buy their product and/or pay for their services. There are plenty of other ways that is not monetary. You can share their work thru your social media and word of mouth. You show up to events that the artist/creative is a vendor at. Just find ways to show as many people as possible of their work and/or service.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for us is all the interesting people we have met so far and building connections that are beyond just the podcast. Additionally, if tomorrow we were to just stop podcasting we will always have a digital archive on the internet to revisit episodes that were favorite moments for us.
