We were lucky to catch up with Tonnisha Deonn recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tonnisha , thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?

I try to live in gratitude so pretty much any act of kindness is greatly appreciated. I have had so many experiences of people showing me kindness and love and I’m forever grateful. The Friends that have supported Hey Gym Friend events, purchase HGF merch, and trust me to go with them on their health journey are priceless.

Tonnisha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I use to weigh 350 lbs! After losing over 150 lbs I got certified in Personal Training and Nutrition. I started my health/fitness company Hey Gym Friend! I have made it my mission to make health and fitness fun and stress-free. Hey Gym Friend is a no judgment zone. We are a body of people that just want to connect and live our best life. Positivity is the only requirement.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I am a lupus warrior. Sometimes lupus flares can make being a personal trainer and exercising a little difficult. One of my insecurities (that I’m working on) is that my hands often hurt and make exercises like pull ups and push ups extremely painful. I often have to push past embarrassment and pain to keep going for it. Wow I’ve never admitted that.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

Overall I’ve learned that people don’t have to be a certain way. Everyone wants everyone else to act or look like what they want. I am learning to let people be themselves and to not judge them if they’re not exactly like me or look exactly like me.
