We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tonisha Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tonisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I am currently taking a risk by transitioning my career into the wellness and creative space.
Of course, it isn’t a risk that others aren’t taking daily, but it is new, and it’s a little scary to me.
I have always been a person that is very creative and does tons of self-care. Yet, nothing ever suggested that there was a way for me to make a living doing the things I actually love. I built a real estate career so that it could be the financial backing to support creative endeavors.
After so long of nonstop, day to day hustle, I was (and still am) burnt out! It’s exhausting, even more so when it’s not the thing you are most passionate about. There was a voice in my head telling me this isn’t the life I want to continue living. I felt like leaning more into the things that are natural and make me feel good. That was where I should be spending my energy.
Making this transition has been risky on a few fronts. I had to make a serious decision to step back from the real estate company I have been building. Stepping back also meant losing a sense of security real estate provided. The scariest step of them all.
Next, I had to let people know what it is I’m doing. I’m not a person that post often on social media or spends a lot of time out socializing so I had to put myself out there. I am grateful that the vibes from my bowls have been able to resonant with some many people thus far. The sounds have led to beautiful opportunities and wellness collaborations.
I am about two years into the journey and things are going very well. I lead a weekly sound healing meditation at the CE Gallery on Wednesday nights in Nashville. I’m also leaning more into private sessions for corporations and school age youth. I’m excited to show up for work and to spread awareness of sound healing and taking time to care for yourself.
Tonisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I like to think of myself as a self-care advocate and a (soon to be) certified Sound Practitioner. I am all about taking time for yourself to take care of yourself, so my offerings encourage that. I realized I couldn’t be the only person needing tools to help be their best selves, so I created TONIC TREKS. First. it was a blog for me to release and connect but turned to a platform to serve as a resource to the public.
I have always been into self-care and music since I can remember. It was priority to spend some part of my day alone. Taking long baths and listening to music that felt good to my body during the moment has always been my thing. But a few years ago, I noticed I wasn’t taking the time to do much of those things anymore. I needed to find a way to get back to a place of authenticity.
I was trying new mediums of healing and I came across a video of someone playing a crystal singing bowl. The vibration hooked me instantly. I thought it was so cool that I could feel the vibration sensations from a video, through a cellphone. I researched and soon bought a small Tibetan singing bowl. I have been incorporating sound into my day-to-day routine since that moment.
One of my favorite mediums to use for self-care is sound. I love to introduce its power to others in collaborative spaces through sound baths.
A sound bath is a one-of-a-kind experience. You are submerged in vibrational sounds for a period. The vibrational sounds interact with our cellular frequencies to restore balance. I use the sounds of Crystal Singing Bowls to help relax, heal and detox our minds and bodies. It’s my favorite thing in the world right now. I listen to sound baths when I need help focusing on the task at hand or to move through frustration.
I offer private sound baths, a weekly public sound bath and a TONIC TREKS’ self-care deck to the community.
The self-care deck is 52 cards designed to help you ground, raise your awareness, and boost creativity. I put all the tools I have in my toolbox into one product you can use throughout the year, repeatedly.
The offerings of TONIC TREKS come and go like the seasons. Things are always evolving. I hope that my offerings will help others become more aware of themselves and those around them.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Authenticity is helping my reputation in this market. I don’t pretend like I’m a healing guru and know all the secrets to live your best life. I admit that I am on a long journey, and it has bumps in the road. Some things I try work for me, others don’t and I’m not afraid to share that. During sessions, I’ll say to a client, “I learned this new thing last week, let’s try it together and see how it works”. They love that we’re evolving and exploring together.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Exposure has been the most effective strategy for growing clientele. Many see posts or videos on social media and reach out. Others and I cross paths with others at events or pulling my bowls out and playing them at the park on a random day.
