We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tonica Logan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, my name is Tonica Logan, but most people address me by my middle name, “Angel.” Born and raised in “Small Town Friendly” Forest City, NC, where everyone knows your name and all your “Kin Folk,” it’s a place of familiarity and comfort. I moved to Atlanta in 2015 to pursue my dream of owning The Progress Place, a behavioral health agency. Fast forward seven years later, God has blessed a little black girl from a small town friendly with not one but two great businesses in Atlanta, GA.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It’s hard to pinpoint a particular time I felt resilient. As the years pass and I reflect on life, I constantly think about my grandmother, who turned 95 years old this year. She has been on this earth for over 34,675 days, and I am privileged to have someone’s life built around being resilient for more than 30,000 days. My grandmother gardened the seed of hard work into my life. She has shown me the meaning of a Sunday well spent. From cooking a soul food meal for the entire family every week by 2 pm to the smell of Clorox and Mr. Clean immediately after dinner and ironing every outfit on Sunday night when preparing for the upcoming work week.
She never was tardy or missed a day of work for over 20 years and never used any vacation time. Today I realized she was grooming and molding me to become a woman of resilience. From being the founder and CEO of a multi-million-dollar agency in Atlanta, Georgia, my greatest accomplishment is becoming a boy mom. Constantly facing challenges daily, I can honestly attest that God used my grandmother to teach and mold me to have the courage to endure any obstacles I face as a business owner and a mother. Today, I am well-equipped to bounce back from any situation with strength and spirit.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
During the pandemic, I learned a lot about Entrepreneur Tonica. Before Covid, I would wake up early for work each morning and drive into an office for 7-9 each day. I had become accustomed to a traditional work ethic, and the boss had to be the first one there and the last one to leave. That was my mindset for many years – to remain busy all day. Today, I am allowing God to direct my path to become less “busy” and more productive by creating a vision board and breaking it down into quarterly, monthly, and daily goals. I understand my vision and mission and how to scale my business by listening and understanding that God’s timing is always the best.
