TONE, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?

The first dollar I earned as a creative was playing the alto saxophone at about 14-15 years old in my mother’s band. Her stage name is Deborah Kay. I also started playing piano and organ for churches at about this age. I learned at an early age it’s possible to be both a creative AND an entrepreneur.

TONE, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I am professionally known as Tone. I am a musician, singer, songwriter, & producer. I’ve been producing and writing music since I was a teenager. I turned it into a business, because I quickly realized that other artists needed direction and help bringing their visions to fruition. Not everyone is a completely self-contained creative, and even if you are, sometimes you need to collaborate with other artists who have different strengths than you. I take a team-player approach to every project I take on, because everyone is not the same and there are different needs for different visions. On some projects, I might be the mixing engineer; on other projects I might handle production or writing.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

Making people feel something.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

EVERYONE DOES NOT THINK LIKE YOU, and you can’t expect them to. I tend to be a very thoughtful and giving person in regards to my relationships. Most people are not.
