Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tomo Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tomo, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My love for jewelry making started back in 2014. I used to work at Joann Fabrics, and during my down time I used to read jewelry making books and magazines all the time! One day I decided “you know…I can do this!” So I bought my first jewelry making kit and just let my hands have full creative freedom! Ever since, I’ve watched countless tutorials, and just kept practicing until I was comfortable in my designs.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tomo! I’m a jewelry artist, as well as a mixed media artist with a passion for the abstract arts. I’m the owner of Out Of Space Jewelry, which is a Y2K inspired accessory brand. I’ve been a jewelry artist for 9 years now, but I’ve been a lover of art since I was a child. I went to Columbia College Chicago, majoring in Illustration, as well as a main focus on Special Effects Makeup. As far as jewelry making goes, I am a self taught artist.
At Out Of Space Jewelry, my slogan is “Elevate your style beyond the stars.” With heavy inspiration from the Y2K era and the 90’s, this brand is more so dedicated to my inner child. I make my jewelry for the adults who still keep their inner child alive, and who aren’t afraid to express that! Out of Space Jewelry is designed for the wild, exotic, and ethereal beings. Delicately crafted with the finest materials that will awaken your inner magic. This collection is dedicated to my alien superstars, my rebels, my weirdo barbies, my hippie babes, and my loves that make this world beautiful!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The easiest and free way to support us is to share our social media posts! Socia media is such a powerful tool, and the algorithm tends to place creatives in the shadows ESPECIALLY smaller creatives. Like and share our posts, tell your friends about us! Shop local! Check out your neighborhood vendors and events!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the biggest thing I struggle with as a creator is my own mind. Too often I find myself my worst critique, constantly doubting myself, and my work. I struggle with anxiety and depression, which messes with my creative flow so much. But I still keep going on making cool stuff for the world to see, because art is my therapy and my relief. It’s a reminder that me and my creations matter in this world. Choosing myself and my art every day is an act of self love and resilience.
For my fellow artists and creatives out there who share the same struggles; keep going. Keep choosing you. Keep choosing your art. The world needs art, beauty, culture, and realness.
