We recently connected with Tommy Wu and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tommy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Looking back on my life, there are two risks that I took that have left a lasting impression on me. The first was switching my career path from management to music creation, and the second was coming to the United States.
When I was in college, I was majoring in industrial management, but I had always been a music lover and played bass as a hobby. However, I had no experience in composing music. In my senior year of college, I began to question whether this was truly the path I wanted to take in life and started to think about my true interests. Since I had a love for music, I decided to try my hand at creating it. As I wrote and recorded the bass for my own music, I discovered a passion for music creation. Over the next two years, I made two personal albums and released them on SoundCloud. This was a magical time in my life when I decided that music would be my career path. However, in Taiwan, making a living in music is difficult, and the entertainment industry is not flourishing. Choosing this path was a big risk for me, but I was determined to make it work.
In 2020, some of my friends told me that the music I made sounded like film music. These comments made me think about the possibility of doing film scoring. I found a private teacher to learn film scoring and was fascinated when I watched my music synchronize so well with the picture. This led me to decide to pursue formal education in film scoring. However, the resources for music education in Taiwan are limited, so I decided to study in the United States. This was the biggest decision I had made in my life. I didn’t have any family or friends in Los Angeles, and I didn’t know what the future held for me. But I knew that this was something I had to experience to become better in my craft.
Tommy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a music composer for multimedia, I specialize in creating music for films, commercials, and games. If you need music for your project, I am here to provide you with music that meets your requirements. I prefer to work closely with directors during the pre-production stage. In my past projects, I have read scripts and taken notes to come up with music ideas. During the session with the director, I provide my ideas from a different angle to ensure that the best music is created for the project.
My personal website, https://www.tommywumusic.net, is where you can find me. If you have any music requirements, please fill out the form on my website. I am always ready to provide my services to help bring your project to life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a music composer, my goal is to watch a feature film screening in the theater with my scoring. That is my dream and drives me to become a better composer.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In college, I majored in management but later pivoted to music creation. I taught myself how to make music, including using DAW software, recording, and arranging. To improve my skills, I frequently watched tutorials on Youtube to make my work process more efficient. The internet offers plentiful resources for beginners, and I took advantage of them to gain the knowledge necessary to pursue my passion.
