We recently connected with Tommy Whitehead and have shared our conversation below.
Tommy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
The story of how I landed my first official construction client is one I often reflect on, filled with the kind of gutsy initiative that defines my business journey. It wasn’t through connections or community circles but rather a strategic approach directly via LinkedIn. I reached out to competitors of my former employer, knowing intimately the challenges they faced because I had been in their shoes. My message was straightforward: I understood their problems and had concrete solutions. I detailed obstacles I had overcome in the industry, showcasing my expertise and reliability. This proactive outreach resonated well, leading not just to one, but three firms hiring my services, culminating in an exhilarating $1 million in sales. That first revenue was not just a financial win; it was a massive confidence boost and a solid foundation for my company’s growth.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As the founder of TomCo Solutions, Inc., I entered the construction industry driven by a love for building and an ambition to make significant community contributions. Our company specializes in full-service residential property makeovers, including kitchen and bath renovations, disaster restoration services, and importantly, initiatives to aid in affordable housing. This commitment ensures we not only enhance property functionality but also address crucial housing needs in our community.
What distinguishes TomCo is our blend of quality service with community engagement, particularly through the Pride Construction Coalition, which champions inclusivity within the industry. We pride ourselves on a business model that not only aims for excellence in construction but also profoundly impacts the community, supporting sustainable development and inclusive growth. I want our clients and partners to recognize that working with TomCo means investing in a company that is deeply committed to both industry innovation and community betterment.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2020, during the global crisis that affected many businesses, my own company, TomCo Solutions, faced significant challenges that nearly led to its closure. The situation demanded a comprehensive reevaluation of our business practices and a shift towards more sustainable and community-focused projects. This period of adversity not only tested our resilience but also reinforced our commitment to innovation and community service, ultimately steering the company through a difficult phase and onto a path of transformative growth and stability.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I started my business, TomCo Solutions, the initial capital came from a modest family loan coupled with a credit line. It was a challenging beginning where every dollar spent had to be meticulously considered. During the early phases, the financial constraints were so tight that drawing a regular salary wasn’t feasible. As the business began to gain traction and profitability improved, I was fortunate to receive free consulting support that helped me navigate the SBA loan process. Although the SBA process was complex and demanding, the guidance I received was invaluable in securing the necessary funds to expand and stabilize the business.
