We were lucky to catch up with Tommy Lennartsson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tommy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Back to nature!
This a project I started with in year 2019.
By combining materials such as found fabrics I created patchwork with different elements for my expressionist canvases.
Now I am back on this journey with a new body of artworks.
Both artworks with patchwork and without.
With my background as photographer, I often used the nature as inspiration for my photo assignments such as food features, commercial, interior and also the production of own book inspired by nature.
With years of spending time in nature hiking and surfing the ocean, places where I can actually breathe and find peace at the same time.
Its like when plants, trees and flowers come to life in spring, with bold colors. I also see the beauty of fall when everyhting seems to fade away in a more earthy tone of palettes.
Its the contrast in nature I want to capture on my canvases.
Tommy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Swedish artist. I actually started my journey as a painter when I was working as a furniture restorer. At the time I used different mediums such as egg oil tempera and oil based paint. I always mixed my own color with color pigments. And I was trained in the old school to do marbling and decorative painting on furniture, interiors and even in chapels.
Today my art is a mix of abstract and figurative elements that give nods to neo-expressionism, faux-naїf, pop, and geometric abstraction schools of art.
I am building up my canvases with charcoal, acrylic, ink, markers, oil sticks and occasionally sews and stitches elements together to create striking scenes that ignite the viewer’s imagination.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I didn’t know much about NFT before I got involved in a project with Saatchi Art and I thought it would be a new challange for me.
In the early stages I had a vision of how my avatars would look. Not too digital – more like a
traditional handmade collage. I wanted the viewer to see that there are different elements
put together. I started by searching through my original paintings to figure out which
elements I would use in my avatar collage. Luckily, I was familiar with photoshop since I’ve
done this kind of artwork before by combining different elements from my existing paintings.
The most challenging must have been making sure to use the different traits and to be
“unique” but I had fun working digitally again.
And I will definitely be creating more artworks for the NFT market in near future! So for all
collectors, there are more to come…
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I like to work with my hands and also to use my various skills and experiences from life to develop new ideas and make my art move forward and experience new sides of my own mind.
And another rewarding thing is also when I have an exhibition and actually get to meet collectors at least for a short while and get some feedback on my artwork.
