Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomás Orrego.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m not really sure at what age I started but it was probably very early on in my life. I think my earliest memories are of me in my room drawing and playing with toys, I was probably 3 or 4. I’m basically doing the same thing today but with more expensive equipment. Everything I do is related to those early moments and I guess that they helped me get where I am today. They taught me to never stop playing in creative ways.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Creative careers are never smooth and it has been a bumpy ride. It still is. A big struggle was deciding what to do with my life as I had studied architecture in undergrad which was something that never brought me any creative freedom to express myself. In architecture things have to be functional and exist in the real world, which was not really what I wanted to create. It did help me though as I learned how to be more methodical and organized. I do apply a lot of things I learned from architecture in my current projects, mainly planing and organizational skills.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a multidisciplinary artist from Lima with a background in architecture who specializes in doing short films and moving image work. My journey into filmmaking was a long one as I first started as an architect and slowly got into visual art doing video installations and collages. I also played guitar and screamed in a punk band back in Lima. I would say that I specialize in any type of image based project, be it moving or still. But mainly I do short form videos like music videos for independent musicians, short films and video installations. I also do a lot of graphic design for film posters, band flyers and album covers.
I would say that what sets me apart from others is that I have experience doing a little bit of everything from my background in different mediums and I like mixing these things up. This helps me be more creative when solving problems as well as creating. Makes it more fun also.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
This is a tough one and I’ll probably think of a thousand others as soon as I write this. What comes to mind at the moment are two things: being sick and missing school to watch cartoons on TV and riding in the car with my parents as they listened to music. Great way to daydream and imagine things.
