We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tom Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tom, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was 24 when I first started pursuing music professionally. I had gone to see the band of some former bandmates of my brother Bill, with whom I had also jammed. They were playing a gig at the EMP (Experience Music Project) in Seattle, in their “Liquid Lounge.” Seeing their performance really gave me the bug to play music. I was unhappy at my job, so during a split shift, I drove to the local music store and put an ad on the bulletin board. I got a call from a band called Wormwood, and the rest is history! I was hired on as their bassist, and as a result, also met one of my best all-time friends, a seasoned former Nashville-based recording engineer, Tom Brown: an integral part of the Wormwood project as their co-producer, and engineer mastermind. I started writing my own original music during this time, and eventually left the band to focus on being a solo artist. Songwriting was something I had longed to do in my years of playing at home, but it wasn’t until age 25 that it really happened. It’s like God opened the door at that point, and I had a new purpose and a calling! I founded Tom Taylor Ministries, followed by my independent label imprint, TTM Records. By the grace of God, I’ve gone on to release 11 albums and several singles, and I’ve been blessed to co-write and collaborate with other artists in recent years. I’m looking forward to several new upcoming collabs and releases!
Tom, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a singer-songwriter that just relocated back to Seattle from Nashville. Most of my music is Christian and worship, but I also write mainstream material, largely consisting of ballads. You’ll hear CCM, country-rock, and even a little bit of jazz. My musical influences include The Beatles, Eagles, James Taylor, and America, just to name a few.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Touching people’s hearts and lives through what I do. When you hear about how a particular song is just what someone needed to hear that day, or when you look out into the crowd and see someone in tears, worshiping to your music, you really see the purpose of what you do, and that it’s so much more than just entertainment.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My online following goes back to the MySpace days. I had a very supportive wife that built my page, my audience, and booked my shows. I went on to build a Facebook following by adding members of fan groups of well-known Christian artists, as well as members of church related groups. Through this also came lasting friendships and connections. I would recommend posting regularly, engaging with fans, and enthusiastically promoting projects.
