We recently connected with Tom Stuen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far would have to be the recent release from my project Troll Foot Frass called ‘Meaties’. Totally self produced spending over 4 years trying to figure out what I’m doing and working over countless rough drafts to get my best pieces of music I’ve ever released to date. In contrast to everything made years prior with limited knowledge of the recording/production process or access to a professional studio. I was determined to create and release an album I could be proud of.

Tom, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m just a person from the middle of Minnesota. I started playing guitar maybe 20 years ago learning, writing and dabbling with other instruments and getting into producing music along the way. Inspired from all kinds of music from the radio and television in the 90s and so on. From playing in talent shows and battle of the bands through high school to meeting Tim Andrews from BiManic Studios who helped open many doors for me that have led me to where I am today, co-founder of Troll Foot Frass along with Jenny Biron who; in addition to providing album art work; paints on stage while I perform music with a loop pedal or back up band. Filling the canvas and finishing a painting every show that we either sell at shows, make prints of or just hang in our home. This also sets us apart from others creating a multi sensory experience for people who come to our shows. Together we’re most proud of what we’ve accomplished over the last 7 years playing shows all over MN as well as some small tours around the United States coming home with over 50 paintings and hours of video and audio recordings to remember forever showing that two people really can just go out and live life how ever you please.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
From playing in bands in high school and after realizing that some times people will come and go and my music needs to keep moving forward. One day I figured “Hey I’m interested in this loop pedal I got and what I can do with it and also these other people I play with are moving on with other things. Maybe I can see how far I can take performing music on my own with the assistance of some fun machines.” And now along with Jenny we’ve performed all over the country living some kind of dream.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Only to quench an insatiable desire to create and express as much as possible and living the life that comes with that desire. We do it for the love of the art itself and if we find people on our journey who enjoy what we share with the world then we welcome them along for the ride.
