We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tom Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tom below.
Alright, Tom thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To me the definition of being successful is different for everyone. There is no standard for measuring success in life. For some, it could be as simple as having the will to get out of bed each morning. And for others, traveling the world while living off of compound interest. Ultimately I view success as not as how much money or material one has acquired, but the drive and ambition one has in their pursuit of their goals that gets them through failure and after failure. Being able to learn from your mistakes (and other peoples as well) and picking yourself up from rock bottom, only to try again from the ground up. Success does not have a guarantee timeline either, it’s different for everyone. As much as I would have liked for my business to be sustainable earlier in life, I realized I had to go through all of the trials and tribulations first. Otherwise it wouldn’t be what it is today.
About 20 years ago I read a quote that has stuck with me, and I share it often:
“Those who said I can’t never did, those who said I’ll try did it all”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
While I’ve been doing acoustical and audio engineering work for over 25 years, I started Carter Miller Acoustics in 2019 in North Carolina to help improve the quality of peoples lives by way of acoustics.
We help people improve the quality of sound in their home, office, places of worship, recording/film studios, etc. Each project is different and its very satisfying once a project is completed to see the smiles on the customers faces, and receive positive feedback. For instance someone has a home built and they’ve been looking forward to using a dedicated room to work in, but to their dismay they cannot tolerate the echo and reverb. We come in to assess, design, build and install acoustic panels for them within budget and they can be now productive.
It addition to acoustic panels, we manufacture bass traps, diffusers and ceiling clouds to name a few.
Customization is a key word, I don’t believe in the cookie-cutter approach.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Classic story of maxing out three credit cards. I was roughly 15k in the red.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Word of mouth. After each project, I personally follow up with a personalized handwritten thank you note and mail it. Providing honest value and nurturing relationships with customers goes a long way. People can pick up on the BS, and theres a lot of it out there.
