We were lucky to catch up with Tom Koch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tom , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
This is a very tricky topic, as an actor I always feel like I cannot allow myself vacations because I never know what’s around the corner. Plus, since COVID every audition is now selftaped (at least for the first rounds) so if I’m traveling I always have to be packing up some filming equipment, in case something comes up – strangely something always comes up when putting on flip-flops and sun glasses. It’s like the Universe just goes, nope. We go from being super busy to chasing new employment all the time, there’s no rest. If we’re not working on set, we’re applying to be.
Vacations seem like an ideal thing. I don’t know a lot of actors who take vacations. It’s part of the job!
Tom , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tom Koch, I am an actor, writer and director based out of NYC. I work on both stage and screen. I created a production company called ‘Mes Films en Couleur’, and this year I wrote and directed my first film called Orange. It tells the true story of a young Frenchman who lost his jaw and the ability to speak due to a pyrotechnic accident. The film focuses on his relationship with his therapist and how our protagonist can re-learn how to express himself.
I have a series of films that I want to make, they are all named after a color, and they’re all based on true events. I romanticized
the stories to fit the skeleton (blue prints) of a script and I try to tell unique stories relevant to me and hopefully others.
Currently in pre-production of the next one, Green.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice
I wish I could force myself to understand what it is, truly. It’s still a mystery to me.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I just finished reading ‘The Fourth Agreement’ by Don Miguel Ruiz. Unique way of thinking that starts with the first agreement (the power of words) which is something I agree with! I think I will try to incorporate his philosophy more into my life. I recommend it!
