We recently connected with Tom Kayonjo and have shared our conversation below.
Tom, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I can confidently say I’m happy as a business owner. there is no need for me to wonder what it would be like to have a regular job cuz I did have a regular job. Me turning into a business owner was never something I considered when I left the University . As the usual script was for most of us back then, after University I got a 9 to 5 job but because of life is unexpected events, my contract of employment ended and I found myself unemployed. At that time, I was living in Kampala but decided to return to Fort portal as I wait for my next employment offer. Since many of my friends knew I’d returned to Fort Portal they occasionally called me up when they were around around to give them a tour around the place since it’s my birth place and I knew it better than they did. That right there was the Genesis of my business venture

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a fun loving, outdoors person so its no suprise i ventured into an outdoors business. I could say my friends did play a big role in directing me towards this path. From being the person that people call when in food portal to show them around it made me realize that I could actually do this for a living and not have to get back into the normal 9:00 to 5:00 work pattern and routine. Deep down Within Me I knew I wasn’t a fun of that cycle and i would prefer to not get back into it. I then decided to give myself an identity as Matunda tours.
At matunda tours we tailor our services to suit what exactly it is that the client would like to do and achieve out of the visit. Very many of our clients come to us with different interests that they want to do so we tailor the experience to make sure each and every single one is Catered for experience wise provided it’s legally acceptable. That aside we give our clients a feel of what it’s like to be part of the community that. Aside from visiting the usual recreational and tourist centers, we look out for community gatherings be it a local festival, community centers, profound schools and charity homes. Literally we enable have a one on one interaction with the community. At the end everyone gets to benefit from this experience be it financial, or socially

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
For me I believe it’s honesty and professionalism you see in this line of business of Tourism it is very key and important to be very professional in what they do and with professionalism comes honesty. There have been a number of cases of people being swindled of their money or what is being sold and advertised is never what is produced in the end. when I get my clients we always lay out a plan of what they would love to do where they would love to to go and what to see. I always make sure we cover each and everything on that list to the best of the expectations and my abilities so yeah that’s what has worked for me the most and it’s brought me to where I am.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Something good always speaks for itself so yes I get most of my new clients through references from my clients and Friends. I do a good job for them they always refer me to the next person that wants to visit Uganda and have an amazing experience. thank you so much to my amazing clients and friends for the references. it’s because of you I am.
