We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tom Goss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tom below.
Tom, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
It always starts with the work. In order to sustain your art, you must create. It won’t always be good, but even bad work has value. As a singer and songwriter, not only do you have to create the work, but share it with others. Most people won’t listen. Most people won’t care. But some will. That is your focus. Connecting with those that connect with you.
Rinse and repeat.
There is no secret. There is no trick. Create, release, share. Give other people the opportunity to invest in you.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a singer and a songwriter. Since 2006 I have released 7 albums, 6 EPs and countless singles and videos. In support of those recordings, I have performed thousands of times in hundreds of cities the the US and Europe. In addition, my music videos have been viewed over 17 million times.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2023 climate, it’s hard to remember what 2005 felt like, especially in the way society views gay people. I’ve always been openly gay. That said, when I started my career, that was a death sentence. I used to have clubs tell me “they don’t book faggots.” Nevertheless, I loved writing, performing, and my husband. I wasn’t willing to compromise on any of those things.
Ultimately, my commitment to authenticity was precisely the thing that drew people to my message. Betting on yourself, and your story, is always the best move.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Honestly, I am very naive. I had no idea that “songwriters” even existed. I thought all artist wrote their own songs, styled their own clothes, directed their own videos, etc…
I spent a lot of my career learning everything, even things that I didn’t enjoy, or weren’t particularly good at it. I wish I would have realized early on that I find people that I knew and trusted, and ask for help.
