We were lucky to catch up with Tom Galloway recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tom, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The craft of songwriting and any creative endeavor can be complex, and at the same time very simple and pure. Artists of any form have so many different means of honing the same creative source. There’s no exact pathway to follow, and all art is fortunately subjective to the creator and the audience. There’s something certainly mystical about the process and it requires faith and discipline. It also takes a strong love for the craft, because all the headaches and heartaches that come with pursuing anything creative has to be eclipsed by your joy of the process and the final results. So to tell a story of learning the craft, I would have to say I’m still happily learning. I think as long as you’re living you should be fine tuning yourself as a person everyday, and the work should reflect that.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Music has been a part of my life since I can remember, but I was about 12 years old when I took it seriously and cut my teeth on the ol’ drum kit. I used that rhythm to start strumming chords on the guitar and few years later, and eventually my interest in singing grew as I started to figured out songwriting. I really wanted to be able to express the words I wrote. I grew up on classics rock and classic country primarily and that has greatly informed my songwriting. I toured around the states with several bands in my twenties and moved to Nashville in 2015. Since moving to town I’ve put out 3 solo records and have been involved in several different groups and songwriting projects. Check out my discography link for the whole catalogue and stay tuned for new music.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Supporting musicians has less requirements and incentives than ever before. As an artist I’ll complain about the amount of money per stream seen on our end, and yet I’m guilty of using the same platform as a consumer, based on pure convenience and instant gratification. If you love a song or a band, consider buying their merchandise. We know you don’t play CDs anymore and vinyl is over-priced, but people still wear band T-shirts right? And of course attending live shows helps the most, as it’s the main means of income for any independent musician, and allows for a real transfer of live energy between the artist and audience

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Two books that have profoundly changed my perspective in life regarding spirituality and the creative process are “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and “The Creative Act” by Rick Rubin.
