We were lucky to catch up with Tom Cudworth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
I had an idea for a movie and hand wrote out about thirty pages. It was a fish out of water scene at a college where one of three friends feels comfortable with the company of young women artists, and the other two flounder because their B.S doesn’t work with these ladies. I read these thirty pages to a young film director and he sat on the edge of his seat riveted as I read. When I finished the he asked me what the movie was about and I said, “not sure but one guy is in love with his best friends girlfriend and this is revealed when he gives her an inappropriate gift to her.” The director knew about structure and I knew about nothing. He came on to write the screenplay with me and the movie was made five years later. With the original idea of the present a plot point.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I had lost both of my parents young at different times and my mother encouraged me to be a writer at the end of her life and three years after she passed away I discovered I wanted to write movies. As a screenwriter I have written or co-written over 20 screenplays a few plays and a Television pilot. I just completed my first novel and have found a publisher. My strength is dialogue and I have found jobs to strengthen the characters. I write in reality based comedy/drama’s and thrillers but I’m very old school. Love old movies and influenced by classic films like Sunset Boulevard , Network and The Graduate to name a few.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to get as much of my work published or produced on film and stage. I’m really in a groove now and the responses to my work have been flattering even in rejection. I’m not terribly precious with my words and I collaborate well with others. My main goal in this life has been the work and as such my personal life has suffered so I guess in the future I want to balance the work with the personal. We shall see.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have been lucky enough to allowed on the set of the films Eric Bross, directed. As such I saved us lots of money by cutting scenes or reworking them shorter. For example. We had a casino school. that was costly to a bare bones Indie Film and I took a five page scene and cut it it to less than two pages at an after hours club and saved the company thirty grand for the day. I function more as a filmmaker than just a writer as I too was allowed in the editing room. I’ve been lucky to have a secure enough director who trusts me.
