Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tolulope Ajayi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tolulope, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
My passion for creating stories started in Lagos, Nigeria, during my childhood. My dad gifted me books, I initially hesitated to read them, but I soon discovered the joy within the world of storytelling. During my downtime, I devoted myself to writing and crafting stories about everyday life or tales from my imagination. The dream of publishing a book surfaced as early as elementary school, but lacking connections with authors within my reach made that dream seem far-fetched. Throughout my adulthood, I continued to write, exploring topics like my travel experiences, shopping adventures, stories for kids, and relationships.
A significant chapter in my writing journey unfolded during the pandemic, a time when life slowed down. It was then that I pursued a dream close to my heart—to create a children’s book. Infused with my African culture, these stories, particularly one highlighting my grandmother and her inspiring words from my childhood, held a special place in my heart. I felt a profound calling to share her daily positive affirmations, believing it could make a positive impact.
The decision to publish was intimidating, fueled by imposter syndrome. Faced with the choice between traditional and self-publishing, I opted for the self-publishing route. Seeking guidance from experienced authors on social media and within my network, I meticulously mapped out my guide to publishing. Having crafted the story, I collaborated with an editor and an illustrator who grasped the essence of my narrative.
The publishing journey presented some challenges, including navigating design choices, securing a captivating cover, obtaining ISBNs, and managing copyright. Smart decision-making and collaborative efforts ensured the creation of a truly exceptional book.
After the book was published, marketing and getting it into the hands of young readers became crucial. Spreading the word involved creating social media pages on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The invaluable support from friends and family added to the momentum. A highlight occurred when a school ordered 100 copies because they loved the books. Launching and witnessing my books reaching readers worldwide, accompanied by heartwarming messages, especially those about kids cherishing them as bedtime stories, fills me with joy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In addition to publishing, I hold a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, a pursuit inspired by a personal experience—the stroke my grandmother endured. Observing the profound impact of physical therapy in diverse settings, from hospitals to homes, fueled my passion to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Currently, I am deeply engaged in training and leadership development within a healthcare insurance company. This role not only ensures financial stability but also serves as a platform for me to pursue my passion for storytelling and self-publishing children’s books. Beyond these professional endeavors, I take pride in identifying as a grassroots philanthropist, actively contributing to causes such as the Children’s Heart Foundation. My commitment to charitable organizations in Nigeria reflects my belief in giving back to the community that has played a significant role in shaping my values.
My literary journey began with “ARA: Beautiful, Brave and Smart,” a heartwarming tale exploring the unique bond between a little girl and her grandmother. This debut children’s book transcends mere entertainment—it imparts valuable lessons on positive affirmation and the transformative power of changing one’s perspective. In my second book, “The Colorful People of Africa: Nigerian Edition,” I extend an invitation to young readers on a vibrant journey, exploring the diverse cultures and faces of Nigeria through an engaging coloring book. It serves as a celebration of the beauty and richness of West African heritage. And my last book published, “A Moonlight Tale of Three Magical Friends” is another enchanting story delving into themes of friendship, forgiveness, and patience. This book serves not only as entertainment but also as a gentle guide for young minds navigating the complexities of relationships.
All my books are readily accessible on platforms like Amazon, ensuring that children worldwide can easily access and enjoy them. I like to think of myself as a storyteller, healthcare professional, and philanthropist—woven together by creativity, compassion, and a commitment to positive impact. I extend an invitation for you to explore my works, join me on this exciting journey, and discover the universal joy of storytelling that transcends boundaries and cultures.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I am in the process of unlearning self-doubt and embracing the journey towards self-belief and authenticity. There was a time when I habitually pondered on “what ifs,” “why me,” and the notion that “I am not good enough or qualified” every time a new idea crossed my mind. This habit hindered me from being my true self and expressing my unique ideas.
The turning point came when I immersed myself in the world of publishing. Amid uncertainties and self-doubt, a profound realization struck me. I understood that these negative thoughts were preventing me from creating a genuine legacy—one defined by the courage to pursue my dreams and showcase my true self. This is a legacy I hope to pass on to my children, encouraging them to believe in themselves and nurture their creativity. The impact of this crucial realization is profound, and my goal now is to transform negative thoughts and self-doubts into self-belief.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The journey to publish my first book tested my resilience, with moments when my dream seemed out of reach. The entire process for the book, including writing, editing, illustrating, formatting, obtaining an ISBN, and securing copyright took about nine months. I dedicated months to diligently searching for the right illustrator, someone whose drawings perfectly complemented the story I wanted to tell. After finding the right illustrator and completing the manuscript, I submitted it for publication through Amazon KDP, where I faced another hurdle. The manuscript was rejected at least six times before it finally got accepted. Each problem I encountered became a learning opportunity.
I share my journey to inspire others to recognize their strength(s). Even when faced with challenges, persistence can lead to achieving anything. If you can persevere, numerous possibilities unfold. Believe in your strength, continue striving for your dreams, and remember that problems are merely steps toward growth and success.
