We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tokyo West. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tokyo below.
Tokyo , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I got my first celebrity client when I was 12 years old back in Newark nj my hometown . His name is Jermaine Hopkins known as ‘steal’ on the movie juice with Tupac shakur, how to be a player with bill Bellamy and lean on me with joe clerk. He is the reason why today I am a celebrity stylist. I was fascinated by the lifestyle also the pay was great especially at 12 yrs old and I knew from that day what I wanted to be which is a celebrity stylist/ hairstylist
Tokyo , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well it started really early for me my mom did hair I was considered a ‘salon baby’ so I started working in a salon at 15 teen years old right across the street from my mom. I am a natural hairstylist and although I am 36 years old I’ve been doing hair for alil over 20 yrs. I provide a service called spring twist and I have clients who travel from all over to get them done and it all started by using hashtags. So if you type in #springtwistatl my work will pop up. Not only am I fast I was told I have Chick-fil-A customer service which is very important to me. What set me aside from the rest is really my unique way of how I do my twist that’s why people travel so far to get them. So shoutout to Alabama, Tennessee,Florida, Charlotte, LA, and jersey for coming the distance to get slayed by me.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What help build my reputation in the beauty and fashion industry because I do both. It was always being consistent, a team player, supportive of up and coming hairstylist/ business owners. I had to give a lot meaning I had to do a lot of free services in the beginning also staying up late doing hair, then there was time I made nothing but because I’m not a sore loser I believed I could and I did.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
i had to unlearn people i had to realize you can’t please everyone no matter how hard you try. the beauty industry can be very critical and if you dont have tough skin you won’t make it. Also people nowadays are scared to expand their business circle because of fear of the other person getting ahead them but I am not them. I learned that when you bless others you will become greater and more resourceful. So to all my entrepreneurs out there reading this don’t be scared to work with others good energy recognize good energy so don’t be scared.
