We recently connected with Tokyo Trendz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tokyo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I realized that I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally was after my high school talent show where I had the opportunity to play in front of 700 people. Keep in mind that this was my first time ever performing in front of a live audience and surprisingly it went over very well and ended with me getting a standing ovation from the crowd. Winning the talent show and getting positive feedback from my peers gave me the confidence to be more intentional and want to take it serious.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Yes, my name is Tyrell and I go by the stage name of Tokyo Trendz. I’m originally from Virginia and I got into the music industry by starting off as an artist & music producer. I later rebranded myself and became a DJ because I discovered that I had a bigger passion for it. The rebrand worked out well and it ultimately gained me more notoriety in the industry. The DJ services I currently provide are doing corporate, club, tour, and mobile dj gigs. I also provide music production services and studio session work as a piano, guitar, and ukulele player primarily. I think what sets me apart from others providing the same services is the adaptability to play to a wide range of different crowds, attention to detail, reliability, punctuality, and enthusiasm to provide the best experience to whatever room or situation I enter. I’m most proud of the corporate brands and artist that I’ve been able to work with while still being 100% independent and having no major backing as of yet. The main thing that I would like for current and future clients to know is that I’m a reliable person that you can count on to show up early and provide an high level experience to your crowd/audience while maintaining professionalism at all times.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part about being a creative is having a vision/idea and bringing it to life for the world to experience it with you. Of course sharing an idea opens you up to critique on whether it’s good or bad but it’s always cool af to share it and have someone say “I get it/I enjoy what you’ve created”.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Oh forsure. The first book that comes to mind is the Alchemist. It taught me that the journey is more important than simply being in a hurry to reach a destination. It’s easy to overlook that nowadays when we live in a world of doing things for instant gratification. The second book that comes to mind is the richest man in Babylon. It gave me a good starting point for managing/growing my money while also laying out a foundation for how to retain it to provide long term success in life. I could go on for days about other books but I’ll wrap the answer to this question up with also including a book called unf*ck yourself. It’s a dope book about outgrowing any self-destructive thoughts you may have about yourself to be able to take full responsibility for your life so you can be in the right headspace to accomplish your goals.
