We recently connected with Toheeb Ibrahim and have shared our conversation below.
Toheeb, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Yes, I am happy as an artist, but it hasn’t always been easy.
There was a time, when I sat in my studio surrounded by unfinished threadcollage works. I hadn’t made a sale in months, and bills were piling up. I remember questioning myself: “Wouldn’t life be simpler with a steady 9–5 job, a salary, and structure?”It felt like I was pouring my soul into my art and getting very little in return.
Few weeks later, I went for a walk to clear my head. On the way, a young man called me and said, “I saw your work online. It inspired me to start creating again.” His words hit me deeply. It reminded me that my work has value, not just financially, but emotionally and spiritually.
I realized then that my happiness as an artist isn’t about daily comfort. it’s about meaning, growth, and impact. Sure, there are tough days, but I’ve learned to embrace the uncertainty and see it as part of the creative life. A regular job might offer stability, but it wouldn’t offer the same sense of purpose and freedom.
So yes, I am happier as a creative not because it’s easy, but because it’s real, personal, and full of possibility.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Toheeb Ibrahim, a visual artist based in Nigeria, specializing in threadcollage a unique technique that involves weaving and layering threads to create textured, emotionally rich portraits and scenes. My journey into art began with a passion for storytelling and a fascination with materials often overlooked. Over time, I developed my signature style using thread, fabric, and mixed media to explore themes of identity, memory, resilience, and the beauty of everyday African life.
What sets my work apart is the emotional depth and cultural relevance woven into every piece. I help people see the extraordinary in the ordinary by transforming simple threads into meaningful stories. My work invites connection and reflection, whether through personal commissions or gallery exhibitions. I want people to know that every piece I create is intentional crafted to speak, connect, and leave a lasting impression.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my mission is driven by a desire to preserve and celebrate African stories and identity through innovative threadcollage art. I aim to inspire deeper appreciation for handmade art while creating works that connect emotionally and culturally with people across the world.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are an exciting innovation that gives digital artists more control, ownership, and direct connection to collectors. I see NFTs as a powerful tool for expanding the reach of artists, especially those of us from underrepresented regions like Africa. While the space is still evolving, I believe it holds great potential for showcasing unique work, building global communities, and creating new income opportunities.
