We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Todd Mrozinski. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Todd below.
Todd , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I was given a chance to meet and spend time with an artist I greatly admire, William Kentridge. After months of being inspired by his exhibition at the Warehouse Art Museum in 2022, the owners, John Shannon and Jan Serr, asked me to escort him from Chicago to Milwaukee and we walked through the exhibition and had dinner with the group. It showed me that enthusiasm about that which you feel strongly about attracts more of it.
Todd , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always loved to draw. It has been my way of understanding and processing my environment and life. The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design opened my eyes to the spiritual and psychological dimensions of art making. After MIAD, I focused on the objects and symbols in my environment. Now, I’m seeing the world through printmaking and capturing still moments of light and shadow of the views out my windows or in my yard. For me, doing my work is a path into presence. Hopefully the pieces will offer this energy to others.
I follow my instinct, allowing inspiration to lead me and produce series that develop naturally from my surroundings. About a year ago, I was offered a scholarship to attend a lithography class at AP3, taught by David Jones. It changed my life and I’m now deep into a series of lithographs.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Freedom. If I can do what I’m inspired to do and share that with others, then I’m happy. My goal is to be in the present moment in every activity that I’m doing, be it making a lithograph, teaching a class or hanging the laundry.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is that I’m creating my world through my vision of it. I’m always learning, seeing the world around me more intensely and exploring materials that keep me intrigued. To share this vision and wonder with receptive eyes is extremely fulfilling!
