We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tobias Wells a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tobias, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
Recently while being in atlanta I witnessed myself get into the darkest moments in life , considered taking my own life because of all my barber equipment & money & personal items being stolen from my car while celebrating my return to atlanta , this made me sad and full of anger and depressed because the equipment was new and i was looking for a new beginning to take over once again in the barber industry… found myself giving up every single day, but with the love and help of family members today i am finally redeeming myself as i said before this life comes with sacrifices & major loses , this life isn’t built for people like me that deal with depression but i fight everyday to voice for the people who fight depression and anxiety everyday, we will be heard!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into this industry unexpectedly, i had talents alot of people go to school to learn, but seems like i was naturally given these talents from birth, i learned to be a barber all alone since the age of 7 watching youtube all day on how to fade, my cousins and siblings were my test dummies, as i got older i mastered the craft, then learned about music and poetry when i got to middle school , as you can imagine these things quickly changed my life, i struggled with depression since a kid , seen alot of things a kid should have not have saw, caused me post traumatic stress and depression, throughout my life more tragedies happened but being me i didn’t let anything stop me i knew i was different so i never gave up even with the odds against me coming from a city that kids don’t make it to 18. I think thats what made me stand out..My work ethic & my drive to be great, I wasn’t like everyone else , I wanted more & thats how i became who i am today.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To see my clients happy, and admire my work is the most rewarding aspect of being a barber / creator, as for being a rapper & singer I would say its relieving to put all of my feelings into a song & for people to finally understand & hear my voice.. I think that is the most rewarding aspect of both of my careers, the outcomes.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
People often don’t understand that sacrifices & discipline play a huge role in becoming successful, there may be things you may not want to do or your business made be slow , but as a person who has won the battle to become successful, keep fighting & thug it out , you’ll get there.
