We were lucky to catch up with Tobechi Mezu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tobechi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, but it’s been a journey of passion, resilience, and constant growth.
It started in high school when my twin sister and I dreamed of becoming YouTube stars. Editing was our superpower, and creating videos became our vision for the future. After completing a video production program, we built our social platforms, learning through passion and persistence.
Professionally, I began with a Social Fellowship at Eater, learning how storytelling and strategy intersect. I moved on to a Marketing Internship with SodexoMagic, managing social media for dining hall campaigns and broader promotions.
At Morgan State University’s Athletics Department, I created engaging highlight reels and promotional content to boost fan engagement. I then earned an NLSE Fellowship, where I focused on production, social media strategy, and crafting impactful stories.
My internship at NFL Films refined my skills in communication and coordination, collaborating with top talent and producers. Next, I worked with the Baltimore Ravens as Marketing Event Staff, focusing on fan engagement, event operations, and enhancing the game-day experience.
Now, as the Social Content Manager at NLSE, I use all those experiences to create engaging, scroll-stopping content for platforms like TikTok.
Although my sister has passed, I continue this journey for both of us. Her creativity still inspires me every day.
Tobechi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a creative storyteller and social content strategist with a passion for sports and digital media.
Every step of my journey has been about blending creativity with strategy to tell powerful stories. I continue this path not only for myself, but to honor my sister’s creativity and ambition, pushing myself to evolve and leave a lasting impact through my work.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I’d understood the power of networking and building connections much earlier. Platforms like LinkedIn and creative Discord communities could’ve helped me establish valuable relationships in the industry and opened doors I didn’t even know existed. Public speaking skills, too, were something I underestimated. Investing time in improving how I present myself, whether through TikTok videos or at real-life events, would’ve made building connections so much easier. Knowing how to effectively communicate my ideas and build genuine relationships would have accelerated my growth and opened up more opportunities along the way.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I used to think creativity alone was enough. I focused on making my work look impressive and engaging. But when I interned with the Baltimore Ravens, I realized that the most successful projects weren’t just about creativity—they were about connecting with people.
It hit me that creativity only works if you understand your audience and have a clear purpose. Now, as the Social Content Manager at NLSE, I make sure my work balances creativity with strategy. It’s not just about making things look good; it’s about making sure they resonate and leave an impact.
