Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tk Gorgonia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tk, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
My last biggest risk this past year was starting a new company. I have been in the entertainment industry for nearly a decade specializing in performance and motion capture for numerous video games, shows, movies, and XR projects. After being let go among the early stages of tech layoffs, I figured now was the time.
I’ve always been a gamer at heart and enjoyed being the bridge among departments and different sides of the video game creation process, so naturally I’ve had dreams of starting my own company.
After coming up with an idea and cultivating surrounding peers and artists in the industry we’ve grown from a team of eight people to over 40+ aiding from over six different time zones to create this first IP.
There is still much more for myself and the team to learn, but the fact that we are here, have learned, and grown so much is the first step in a long journey I’m excited to embark on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So my bread and butter still to this day is specializing in motion capture. When you see behind the scenes clips of people wearing suits in a studio to create video games is what I’ve been grateful of being around for almost the past year. From earlier marvel movies like Spider-Man Homecoming, to newer video game releases like Star Wars Survivor with a grip of shows, and XR projects, it’s been something I never thought I’d be able to build a career on coming from studying nursing and serving ice cream post college.
Despite the ever growing list of projects, the people and mentors I’ve met along the way are by far the best part of my career, and now being able to instruct at universities and continue passing on what I love is the most fulfilling aspect of my day to day.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The industry as many might know has many highs and lows. From constant rejection and disbelief in who I am and my abilities, are obstacles I constantly battle against. Even after a decade I have to remind myself “if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be” and to do my best at what I can control.
More recently my thoughts of flexibility and empathy are accompanied by the idea that “life can at time be not easy, but it can still be good” and that “luck, is when preparation, meets opportunity”.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The initial capital comes from self funding and growing my financial education over my professional career. My family doesn’t come from money, and growing up my mother did everything she could to instill good morals and principles but I had to take it upon myself to learn how to better manage money.
When I finally started to set my own work schedules, and rates I had to do TONS of research and have conversations with finance professionals that I normally wouldn’t have thought of having. This was beneficial because when I did start making a decent salary I was able to save, invest, and think about what future Tk would need.
Only reason I’ve been able to survive the pandemic and times of layoffs or slow business is because I continue to learn everything I can about being better financially.
