We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Titus Maz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Titus below.
Titus , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have a long history of live music and bands from an early age but as an Italian born and raised I’ve always felt a slight judgemental attitude from the people around me. Many environments suffer from a certain kind of social pressure which forces a kid to put the artistic talent aside and keep it as a hobby while focusing on achieving a more ” serious ” job.
Despite all that i managed to always get some great achievements as a guitarist or composer and then I got to a point where i could think about only doing music.
I know there’s loads of people : coaches and trainers, spreading the concept of never having any ” Plan B ” but as a contrast I am more advocating for a gradual process based on paying attention to the environment around us and see when it’s the right time to switch to a full time artistic career.
The only way to speed up the ” process ” in my humble opinion are related to speeding up your musical maturity, aside from the business side of it.
Providing that, like me, any musician would change is mind and deepen his knowledge and culture growing up, the ideal process is to grow as fast as possible !

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a guitarist, singer and composer who also produces and coproduces for himself and for others. Started as a guitarist for bands in different environments and countries and managed to do some touring.
Whenever I work with an artist my focus is to adapt and do the best possible arrangement around their songs.
It’s always important to match the energy for a best live performance and also essential to both have some ” room reading ” skills which allow us to tailor a live performance on the audience last minute or even in the making.
I am very proud to have almost fully produced my last album with the help of a really good coproducer but keeping a solid vision and control over the overall artistic angle.
That helped me to be even better in future productions both for me and for collaborative projects.
I am always looking for new collaborations with artists that match my vision and share a passion for Jazz, contemporary Jazz and fusion.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to direct my creative journey towards something which is true to my spirit and the musicians’ souls I’m working with. I see the improvisational freedom that revolves around Jazz not as totally unhinged but based on some rules which foundations are rooted in a deep cultural knowledge.
It’s quite obvious that this cultural path is a lifetime process we could see this collaborative work with other musicians as a long term endeavour.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a musician is sharing the stage with great musicians and create new things on the spot. I would say there are two sides of the music creating process, one could be a live improvisation that would just stay in the air and would be just ( possibly ) appreciated by the audience and then vanish.
The second one would be the creations you are lucky to get a grasp on while recording in the studio.
There are two different feelings after a rewarding live performance when each of the musicians has given his extra and after a recording where you are sure and satisfied that your efforts are there on tape and you can work on them and refine them to get to the final product.
