Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Titus Haug. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Titus thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As an artist for better or for worse there is always a never ending list of projects either being worked on or formulating inside my brain. Most recently I embarked on the journey of writing and recording my third full length record. Though every project holds meaning for me, this most recent one has special significance as it has been a record I’ve dreamed of making for quite some time. My fans / community came together to help fund it and some of my favorite collaborators played on it. Because I am in the very middle of the process with this album it feels fresh and exciting. I often feel this way in the middle of working on something creative. I do my best to immerse myself in the project and give it my all so that when the time comes to share it I can rest easy that I gave it all I had.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My focus both creatively and professionally has always been music and photography. Currently music has taken the primary focus as I have been working on my third full length record in the past few months. It’s been a life long journey of growing accainted with my instrument and artistic voice. I’ve really been leaning into my craft with the intent of being myself completely and not worrying about how the music is received as much. My goal at this point is to make art that I am proud of and excited to listen to / view. It’s really easy to get caught up in comparison or worry when it comes to creating art and I feel that in the last few years I’ve been able to grow out of that mindset. The art I’m most interested in is the art that is a true representation of the creator of the art. I’m keeping that in mind with my own work. Along with the new record I’ve also been working on a surf photography book for the past 8 or so years. I’m hoping to finish that project in the somewhat near future but I also enjoy working on it so much I don’t want it to end!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There is a certain childlike joy that comes from being creative. In it’s essence I find that I’m making my best work when I’m enjoying what I am doing. Whether someone is an artist or not I think this principle applies. when you’re having fun doing what you’re doing, be it photography, music, science or business I think you do your best work. So to me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is two fold. One is that there is great joy and fun in creating art. The second is that it is something that can spread that same inspiration and joy to others.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
This is more of a mindset than a resource but important non the less. Remember that success and growth doesn’t happen over night. We are constantly fed others success and best moments without seeing the struggle and time it took to get there. No one who is doing something at a high level got there without patience and hard work. Especially with art I find that people tend to think that the people doing these things are just more talented than others. Sure, they may have talent, but most of the times they are just people who worked really really hard to get better at doing what they wanted to / liked to do.
