Titobi, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Inspired by a fervent desire to protect our planet and empower underserved communities, JustUsedTech emerged from a simple yet impactful idea. Observing the careless disposal of perfectly functional technological devices on my college campus, I initiated a grassroots movement to reclaim these often-overlooked resources. By actively collecting unused gadgets and purchasing outdated technology from indifferent individuals, I sought to breathe new life into these discarded items.
As an engaged member of various campus organizations, I recognized the potential of these revitalized devices to bridge the digital divide in rural areas. By providing access to essential technology, I aimed to empower individuals and communities that had been historically marginalized.
Today, JustUsedTech addresses two critical global challenges: environmental sustainability and digital inequality. Unlike traditional recycling or donation programs that focus on a single aspect, we seamlessly integrate both approaches. By repurposing old technology, we minimize electronic waste and reduce the strain on our planet’s resources. Simultaneously, we distribute these refurbished devices to underserved populations, enabling them to participate fully in the digital age.
What continues to fuel my passion for JustUsedTech is the profound impact it has on both the environment and society. My name is Titobi Oreolorun, and I lead the charge at JustUsedTech, a pioneering 501(c)(3) organization with a captivating mission: to bridge the digital divide in underserved communities using upcycled technology. We don’t just serve individuals; we empower corporations to achieve their sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals on both local and international scales.
Here at JustUsedTech, we stand apart from the traditional recycling and non-profit landscape. We’ve meticulously crafted a distinct model for collecting, meticulously sorting, and then meticulously upcycling discarded technological devices. These revitalized devices are then strategically deployed to create a social good ripple effect. A significant portion is used directly in underserved communities, fostering digital inclusion and empowering individuals to connect, learn, and explore new horizons. To ensure our own sustainability, a carefully selected subset of upcycled devices finds its way onto e-commerce platforms, generating vital revenue to fuel our mission.
Our impact speaks volumes. We’ve directly transformed the lives of over 10,000 individuals and partnered with more than 20 forward-thinking corporations – and these numbers continue to climb. It is challenging to build a business especially with what we are trying to achieve at Justusedtech. Justusedtech’s story is an inspiring example of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The company’ persevered through numerous obstacles, including funding challenges and market fluctuations, to build a successful business that continues to thrive today. How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
As the visionary founder of Justusedtech, I embarked on a journey fueled by passion and resourcefulness to breathe life into my dream of bridging the digital divide and combating e-waste. With a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to sustainability, I embarked on a bootstrapping journey, leveraging personal funds and creative strategies to lay the foundation for Justusedtech.
The journey began with a deep-rooted belief in the power of technology to transform lives. I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by individuals and communities lacking access to essential tech devices. Determined to make a difference, I decided to turn his passion into action and founded Justusedtech.
With limited financial resources, I embraced a bootstrapping approach, prioritizing resourcefulness and efficiency. He meticulously planned and executed each step, maximizing every dollar spent. I leveraged his personal savings, carefully allocating funds towards essential operational costs, inventory procurement, and marketing efforts.
To supplement my personal funds, I explored innovative avenues for securing additional capital. I actively sought out grants and competitions focused on social impact and sustainability, crafting compelling proposals that highlighted Justusedtech’s mission and potential. While securing grants proved challenging initially, I persevered, refining his applications and building relationships with potential funders.
Additionally, I tapped into my network of friends, family, and acquaintances, seeking support and guidance. I shared my vision with enthusiasm, inspiring others to contribute to Justusedtech’s growth. Some offered valuable advice, while others provided small financial contributions, further fueling the company’s momentum.
Throughout this journey, Oreolorun faced numerous challenges, including limited resources, skepticism from potential investors, and the complexities of navigating the tech industry. However, I remained steadfast in his belief in Justusedtech’s mission, demonstrating unwavering resilience and determination.
Today, Justusedtech stands as a testament to entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to sustainability. Through a combination of bootstrapping, personal funds, and strategic partnerships, I have successfully built a thriving business that empowers individuals and communities while minimizing e-waste.
