We recently connected with Titania Hunter and have shared our conversation below.
Titania, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My journey as an artist began at a young age, in elementary school. I often was found creating colored pencil drawings. My first art experience started in high school when I had an opportunity to display my work. I obtained a 2017 Congressional Art Certificate, signed by a U.S. Representative, Richard Hudson. Graduated with a High School diploma in 2018, soon after, and received an AFA at Central Piedmont Community College in 2020. Once there, I began to create drawings in my sketchbook observation-based. Took a few drawing classes to enhance my skills and knowledge on the subject.
After that, I transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My original concentration was illustration, but later was changed to painting. I knew that painting was the area that I wanted to focus. I visited art museums in North Carolina, including the Mint Museums in both locations, VAPA Center and the McColl Center. Viewing artists work inspired me.
Being at UNC Charlotte has been an incredible experience so far. I have met amazing artists along the way. I am proud of all the work that I have done. I can truly see the progression and my overall style. I am excited about what is to come, further on, in my art career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Titania Hunter. I am a visual artist and a content creator from North Carolina. I combine abstract along with realism to create multidisciplinary acrylic and oil paintings. My work is meaningful and communicates to the viewers in a way that they can either relate to or connect to. It shows movement and the flux of space.
I took on commissions from local clients. When doing commissions, I make sure that I professionally customize artwork that they would enjoy. I help clients with requested expectations and understand their needs. I have been selling my original pieces to local buyers, but then I thought it was time to put my products online. My online store launches on March 23, 2023. My store will provide good quality products with an updated, organized website. The store will have original paintings, prints, apparel, etc. It will have many options to choose from.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During my art journey, there were ups and downs and moments when I had to take a break from art because of particular difficulties in my life. I went through things spiritually and emotionally. My mother was in and out of the hospital, battling heart disease, lupus, and arthritis. Art was not on my mind at the time. I wanted to take care of my mom. Despite my mom’s illness, she still told me to keep going. So, I did. She encouraged and supported me.
A year later, my mom got a new heart. Once she healed enough, my mom, dad, little sister, and I decided to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. When we came from the 3-day trip, we did not expect to catch Covid. Everything went downhill days later, after the trip. My parents went to the hospital while I was with my little sister at home. I did some house cleaning and provided groceries before my parents came home.
Unfortunately, my mother did not come home. She passed in the hospital on October 9, 2021. It was a difficult time for my family and me. However, I knew that she wanted me to keep going. She wanted me to follow my passion and continue moving forward in my life and art journey. This is the story that best illustrates my resilience.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started building my audience on social media in 2021. I thought it was time to begin showing people my artwork. My earlier to recent work shows a transition from black charcoal drawings to colorful drawings and paintings. After attending painting classes at UNC Charlotte, I have been experimenting and using different mediums. It was until my senior year in college that I realized I wanted to create acrylic and oil paintings.
Building an online presence takes time and patience. Being consistent is another important thing to do. You can post every week, at least 2-3 times. Just to let your audience know that you are consistent. I believe that posting more will engage them. Questions to keep in mind, What do you want to show your audience? What is your target audience? What are your goals? Your mission?
The most important thing is to have fun! Connect with people online as you build your audience on social media. I have met amazing artists, especially on Instagram. As I continue growing, I believe that I will meet more people along the way.
