Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tisha Martin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
I edited a book during the worst of my symptoms.
As a solopreneur, sometimes taking time off doesn’t play cards.
As solopreneurs, we…
– dedicate time to our authors
– determine to deliver projects on/before deadline
– add value to every moment
But sometimes…
– illness derails the timeline
– unexpected snags delay manuscript progress
Fingers deep into a manuscript that needed a near-complete rewrite, I muscled through.
Taking micro-breaks.
Communicating with the author.
Planning tasks one day at a time.

That book won a national award. Second place in its category.
That book won the hearts of its readers. And an Instagram viral reel with 20k views.

Nothing short of a sheer miracle. And everything long of fierce dedication.
But we accidentally left out the acknowledgments page.
Next time? We’ll actually use the dadgum checklist!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Since 2014, as an award-winning editor and author, I’ve worked with authors in various capacities across fiction and nonfiction: coaching, developmental and line editing, copyediting and proofreading, and writing back-cover blurb copy. I enjoy working with transformative, relational, and redemptive themes that invite readers to feel, think, and appreciate beauty, even in tension.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media will not build your business. The beauty is in networking, conversations, and uplifting others. I enjoy in-person conversations. If you’re like me, you appreciate conversations with people about meaningful topics. Each of us is here to make a difference in the world around us. When I started building a social media presence, I didn’t use social media. I networked at events and conferences. Grew initial relationships that way, and then used social media to keep up with my contacts and colleagues. Social media is not difficult. Social media is one conversation at a time.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In business and in life, we learn many things. Most learning happens in those formative years. That learning subtly transferred into my early career years. And the unlearning is a chasm that can be crossed and overcome. Trust, dedication, active listening, and assertive and clear communication are among the four pieces that transformed my life and my business into what it is today. Learning happens every day. Embrace the curiosity: you’ll create resilience, strength, and courage.
