We recently connected with Tisha Grant and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tisha, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for The ContractHer out of sheer necessity—my own frustration and struggles with home renovation. After going through a divorce, I found myself in a position where I had to renovate and manage my home on my own. I quickly realized that finding trustworthy contractors was harder than it should be, and when I did hire professionals, I often felt overlooked, underestimated, or flat-out taken advantage of. The industry wasn’t built to educate or empower homeowners, especially women, and I wanted to change that.
At first, I started learning out of survival—I needed to fix things in my home, and if I wasn’t going to find reliable help, I had to become the help. I dove deep into learning drywall, electrical, flooring, and more, and I realized something: I loved this work. More than that, I loved teaching other women how to do it, too. The confidence that comes from knowing you can fix, build, or create something in your home is unmatched, and I wanted to bring that empowerment to as many people as possible.
I knew this would work because the demand was there—every time I shared my skills, women would say, “I wish I knew how to do that” or “I’m tired of waiting on someone else.” The traditional trades industry wasn’t prioritizing education for women, and DIY home renovation courses were either super basic or overwhelmingly technical. I found my niche right in the middle: practical, hands-on education designed specifically for women who want real, usable skills.
The most exciting part? Watching people transform right before my eyes. Students walk into my workshops thinking they can’t—that they’re not “handy” or that they’ll mess up. But by the end of the class, they’re cutting trim, installing tile, and using power tools like they’ve been doing it for years. It’s not just about renovations; it’s about self-reliance, confidence, and breaking barriers in a male-dominated field. That’s what keeps me going.

Tisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Tisha, the founder of The ContractHer, and if you had told me years ago that I’d be running a home renovation and DIY education business, I might have laughed. But life has a way of leading you exactly where you need to be. I got here because I had to figure it out for myself first.
After going through a divorce and buying my own home, I found myself in the frustrating, expensive world of home renovations. I quickly realized that the industry isn’t built to educate or empower homeowners—especially women. I was tired of getting the runaround, overpaying for work I wasn’t happy with, or feeling like I had to rely on someone else just to make basic fixes in my home. So I did what I’ve always done when faced with a challenge—I learned to do it myself.
What started as survival quickly turned into passion and expertise. The more I learned, the more I realized I wasn’t the only woman who felt this way. Every time I shared my projects, women told me, “I wish I knew how to do that” or “I don’t even know where to start.” That’s when I knew this was bigger than just my own journey—it was a movement.
What I Do & What Sets Me Apart
I built The ContractHer to bridge the gap between homeowners and the knowledge they need to take control of their spaces. My business is unique because I don’t just provide home renovation services—I also teach and empower women to DIY with confidence. Whether it’s my in-person DIY workshops, my online courses, or my hands-on home renovation projects, every part of my business is about education, self-sufficiency, and empowerment.
Here’s what I offer:
✅ DIY Classes & Workshops – Teaching real, hands-on renovation skills for homeowners.
✅ Online Courses – A structured way to learn remodeling, power tools, and home repair.
✅ Renovation Services – Transforming spaces while educating clients along the way.
✅ Epoxy & Decorative Finishes – Bringing custom, artistic finishes to floors and surfaces.
✅ Consultations & Design – Helping clients plan and execute their dream spaces.
The Problem I’m Solving
Women shouldn’t have to rely on someone else for every repair or renovation in their home. The trades industry often overlooks, underestimates, or intimidates homeowners—especially women—and I refuse to let that continue. The ContractHer gives women the tools, the knowledge, and the confidence to make informed decisions, avoid being ripped off, and even take on their own projects. Because once you learn a skill, no one can take that away from you.
What I’m Most Proud Of
Honestly? The women I’ve helped transform, not just their homes, but their confidence. Seeing someone walk into my class saying, “I’ve never touched a power tool before” and leaving with the skills to build, repair, or renovate—that’s what keeps me going. I’ve had students open businesses, finish projects they never thought they could, and stop second-guessing themselves when it comes to home improvement. That’s the real impact of my work.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and The ContractHer, it’s this: You are more capable than you think. Whether you want to **DIY a project, hire a contractor without being taken advantage of, or simply understand your home better—I got you.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been Instagram and word-of-mouth referrals—and honestly, that’s a testament to the power of community, trust, and real results.
Instagram has been my biggest driver for DIY class sign-ups because people can see my work in action, watch my hands-on approach, and feel empowered by the content I share. It’s not just about pretty before-and-afters—I break down the how and why, so people trust me to teach them skills that actually work. Plus, when students and clients share their experiences, their followers see the impact and want to be a part of it too.
For my renovation clients, word-of-mouth is king. Homeowners don’t just want someone who can do the work—they want someone they can trust to bring their vision to life without cutting corners or leaving them confused. The fact that past clients refer me again and again means that the work speaks for itself.
At the end of the day, people want real skills, honest guidance, and work they can be proud of. That’s what keeps them coming back—and telling their friends about me!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my audience on social media wasn’t an overnight success—it took consistency, real engagement, and showcasing value in a way that connected with my audience. When I first started, I didn’t overthink it—I simply shared what I was doing: DIY projects, home renovations, and the skills I was learning along the way. What I quickly realized was that so many people, especially women, wanted to learn these skills but felt intimidated by the process. That’s when I started leaning into education-based content while keeping it fun, real, and engaging.
One of the biggest factors that helped me grow was showing up authentically. I didn’t pretend to be perfect or know everything—I showed the struggles, the problem-solving, and the process. People love seeing the journey, not just the end result. I also engaged heavily—responding to DMs, answering questions in the comments, and creating content based on what my audience actually wanted to learn.
Advice for Those Starting to Build Their Social Media Presence:
✅ Post consistently – Even if you don’t have the “perfect” content, showing up regularly builds trust.
✅ Focus on value – People follow you for a reason. Teach them something, inspire them, or entertain them.
✅ Engage with your audience – Respond to comments, ask questions, and create a community, not just a following.
✅ Show personality – People connect with YOU just as much as they do with your content. Don’t be afraid to be yourself.
✅ Use video content – Reels, TikToks, and live videos get higher engagement and help people see the real you.
The biggest key? Stay consistent and patient. Growth happens when you focus on serving your audience and showing up authentically.
