We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tisha Dolby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tisha below.
Tisha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Being the founder/executive director of a non-profit organization makes it very difficult to continuously go to friends and family for support. We are a smaller organization and don’t have major donors, recurring donor base, or corporate sponsorship that allow for our organization to have the capacity to operate effectively and fulfill our mission. Most people have a misunderstanding of how nonprofit organizations operate and the funding barriers that we face.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Tisha, an advocate, speaker, a trauma informed lifestylist coach & founder/Executive Director a faith-based nonprofit organization is a survivor, and overcomer was exposed to alcoholism and drug addiction from birth and enduring child abuse and domestic violence, sexual assault, and loss of a child (SIDS). Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Were to begin…being founded in mid 2016 with limited resources and support we started off in a questionable place. It was not that much of an issue because the mission, vision, value of the organization outweighed any doubts that we faced. We understood the need was too great not to start. We were just beginning to navigate the arena and get a flow going with our programs, services and support and were hit with our first major blow…COVID-19!!! I know I don’t have to explain how this created hindrances, barriers and roadblocks to our organization and the world. Not only was we not able to host in person activities, events, or programs the increase in trauma, and violence numbers skyrocketed and still haven’t been appropriately reflected. We were dealing with the obstacles of providing help for women while they were in harm’s way safely and seeking funding such a new organization. As if this was not enough barriers to overcome, we also had an organizational relocation from California to Texas (2021). This transition was met with the loss of some our community partners and a great deal of our financial supporters. The relocation almost took us out because we had to rebuild our community relationships up as if we were a brand-new organization all the while still having to continue operating. We were required to continue operating in fear of losing our 501c3 status although we were underfunded. We were in a position that we didn’t meet the requirements for seeking certain funding because we weren’t a new organization, but we also didn’t have the consistent recurring giving.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What has helped me build my reputation in the market is the fact that I am a survivor, advocate, and a trauma informed coach with 25 plus years of experience. With lived experience I not only successfully stopped the multi-layered multi-generational cycle within the raising of my children. I have full understanding of what the need is, where the gap is, and we provide a comprehensive tailor-made programs and services that address the core of the problem leading to permanent solutions. Lastly, while founded the organization was 2016, I began doing the work out of my home while raising my children, breaking the cycle, and also providing assistance to friends, family the community to do the same.
