We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tino Perez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tino , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I embarked on a new journey when a friend proposed a partnership in the computer business. This opportunity led me to make a bold decision: I left my job at the time. Together, we began the exciting process of finding a suitable location, securing permits, and handling all the necessary preparations. Naturally, I was filled with apprehension, as this venture was entirely new to me. However, I’ve always believed in my ability to achieve my goals.
When we finally acquired our business space, it felt akin to welcoming a newborn into the world—a responsibility that required nurturing and growth. I recognized the significance of choosing the right name for our enterprise; after all, a captivating name can draw attention.
The journey was nothing short of incredible. Even as we were in the midst of painting and setting up our place, we started receiving customers. My reputation in the community helped spread the word rapidly about our newly opened business. We were fortunate enough to host a Grand Opening event, which was graced by the Burbank City’s Mayor, further enhancing our visibility.
I vividly recall the excitement of unboxing our first cell phone for repair and assisting our initial customers. My partner and I initially started as equals and later hired an employee. My vision was to develop a prominent repair company, particularly focusing on the surging popularity of iPhones. Gradually, we expanded our services to include computer repairs.
What I noticed was a gap in the market that we could fill with exceptional customer service and top-quality workmanship. To this day, we remain the repair company offering the most comprehensive guarantees in the market. Unfortunately, partnerships don’t always thrive, especially when one party doesn’t share the same level of dedication. After four years of stability, I felt stuck, bearing the burden of bringing in customers while my partner’s effort dwindled. It was then that I made the pivotal decision to buy out my partner.
Becoming the sole owner turned out to be the best decision I ever made. With complete control, I could make swift decisions and propel our growth. Our presence in the city grew, and we even appeared on television for technology interviews and other exciting opportunities. My dream was finally materializing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Laurentino Santoyo-Perez, commonly known as Tino Perez. My fascination with technology and electronics repair ignited during my childhood, and I began tinkering with devices at the tender age of 8. Over the years, I honed my skills in audio systems for cars and window tinting, amassing nine years of experience in the field.
Gradually, I transitioned into repairing cell phones and computers for friends. My thirst for knowledge led me to delve deeper into the intricacies of voltages and polarities, ultimately culminating in the professional establishment of my business in 2012.
Today, our company offers a diverse range of services, catering to both residential and commercial clients. Our offerings encompass IT services, computer and cell phone repairs, consultations, prepaid cellphone activations, cellphone and computer accessories, custom-built computers, smart home setups, surveillance camera installations, web design, app development, and a host of other services.
What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. We don’t shy away from challenges or turn down jobs simply because they may not be the most profitable. Instead, we go the extra mile to address your problems and concerns, treating you like family while upholding the respect you deserve as a valued client. It’s this dedication that has earned us recognition as the best in our city Burbank and the state of California for multiple consecutive years.
We take pride in our appearance on television over 300 times, an impressive feat for a small business. It’s heartwarming to receive an abundance of gifts from our customers during special occasions like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day, a testament to the satisfaction we bring to their lives.
Our custom computer designs are not only unique but also meticulously clean, reflecting our commitment to quality. We hold a patent for our brand and continuously work on innovative projects to fuel the growth of our company.
With over 6,000 followers on Instagram, nearly 10,000 on Facebook, and consistently receiving 5-star ratings across all platforms, we are humbled by the trust and support of our community. Our journey is a testament to our dedication to providing exceptional service and fostering lasting relationships with our clients.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Despite the skepticism from both acquaintances and even some family members, who believed that starting a business would be an arduous endeavor, we embarked on this journey with determination and limited resources. Many voiced concerns about the challenges of launching a business in California, emphasizing the need for substantial knowledge and capital.
In our case, we began with scant finances, relying on credit cards and a $20,000 loan, bolstered by a meager $5,000 worth of cellphone parts. These initial funds were primarily allocated towards the shop’s design, reception desk, and necessary tools. As we ventured further, we gradually expanded our investments in parts and accessories. Our strategic focus primarily gravitated towards services, a deliberate decision aimed at conserving capital, allowing us to reinvest and foster our growth, rather than tying up funds in products.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Economic challenges are a common part of any business’s journey, and I vividly recall numerous instances where I willingly sacrificed my own weekly paychecks to ensure that my employees were paid. In my perspective, as the owner, the ultimate responsibility rests squarely on my shoulders, and it’s crucial not to let those responsibilities adversely affect our hardworking staff.
Undoubtedly, it’s a challenging situation when you have your own bills to settle, but I firmly believe that sacrificing our employees’ livelihoods should never be the solution. That’s precisely why saving during prosperous times is so essential – it provides the necessary buffer to weather the storms that inevitably come our way.
